A superb example of an early English tea poy of compact proportions. First quarter of the 19th century, Regency period. The rectangular hinged lockable lid with corner canted angles, enclosing four lidded compartments, above an exquisitely hand carved foliate and leaf capped column with shaped platform base ending on finely carved claw feet. Condition: Superb condition with no losses to inlays, interior foil linings are quite worn, very nice untouched surface patination. Coromandel ebony wood is variegated, streaky brown and black, nearly always wide striped. It is considered a highly valuable wood for turnery, fine cabinet work and joinery. The tree grows up to 20 meters under favourable circumstances, although such trees are rarely seen nowadays. In mint condition, this caddy retains its exceptionally hand engraved brass inlay, rosewood exterior, with works of ebony within the corner scrolling volutes. The interior lids are original also retaining their exceptionally fine engraved brass inlays and the interior of each caddy box retains portions of its original foil lining. The center well has an extraordinary Anglo-Irish cut glass pedestal mixing bowl which may not be original but fits perfectly well (and is as receieved/purchased).
