Cast Candlesticks

A rare late Gothic pricket-pan candlestick in bronze/brass from the 16th century, from the Low Countries or North-West Europe, probably an excavated find. A tall, tapering stem with turned rings rises from a wide drip pan on a hexagonal base with six small feet, with a dark, matt excavated patina. At the top is a second, smaller pan with a candle holder. This type of disc or drip-pan candlestick was made in the late Middle Ages and the 16th century in the metalworking centres of the Low Countries and the Meuse region. The dark, matt patina with local encrustation is consistent with an object that lay in the ground for centuries. Comparable late Gothic candlesticks are mainly seen in museums and at specialist auctions. Condition Excavated patina with encrustation. There is a crack along the length of the stem and an old repair with tin on the underside. Stands stable. Please see the photos for details.
