Antique Belle Époque Circular Gilt Brass Textile Glass Photo Photograph Frame Continental Brass, glass, textile c. 1900 Dimensions: D: 11cm (external) 9cm (internal) This charming photo frame showcases the elegant Belle Époque style. Belle Époque design flourished in France between 1871 and 1914, a period defined by cultural optimism, technological progress, and a taste for refined elegance. Its aesthetic favoured graceful curves, delicate ornament, and luxurious yet lightweight materials, creating interiors and objects that felt modern, decorative, and effortlessly sophisticated. The frame is circular, with a beautifully cast high‑relief gilt‑brass border. Circular frames were especially popular during this era: their soft, harmonious silhouette suited Belle Époque aesthetics. Behind the glass pane is a sepia family photograph of a mother with her child. To the reverse, the frame includes a spreading easel stand and a small hanging hoop, allowing it to be displayed either on a tabletop or mounted on a wall. The back of the frame is covered with a floral textile — a feature typical of frames from this period. The fabric backing served several purposes: it provided a soft, decorative surface behind the photograph, making the object attractive even when viewed from the back; it protected the glass and photograph from abrasion; and it allowed makers to incorporate fashionable textiles, often floral or damask patterns that harmonised with Belle Époque interiors. Beautifully finished on both sides, the frame delights from the front and surprises the viewer when turned, revealing its polychrome floral textile.
