Beautiful engraving made by John Boydell from a work by Claude Lorrain. It represents shepherds guiding their cattle in the forest in front of a harbor landscape with ships. On the back of the frame is glued the framer's label with the words: "estampes anciennes Maurice Rousseau". Numbered 26. The painting from which the engraving originated was in the private collection of the Duke of Devonshire.
Claude Gellée, more commonly known as Claude Lorrain, was born in 1600 and died in 1682. He is a painter, draughtsman and engraver from Lorraine. He was an independent artist and a figure of landscape style. He exhibited his first painting at the age of 29, which is now on display at the Philadelphia Museum.
