19th C. Patinated Bronze Hunter and Dog Composition Signed H. Moreau

About the Item

Decorate a man's office or hunting lodge with this elegant antique bronze composition. Titled "Piqueur au Relais", and signed on the base by the artist, Hippolyte Moreau, the bronze sculpture depicts a French Huntsman in apparat clothing holding his hound dog with the left hand and carrying a horn in his right hand. This sculpture was a collaboration between two well-known French sculptures, Hippolyte François Moreau (1832-1917), who sculpted the huntsman, and Prosper Lecourtier (1851-1924), who sculpted the hounds. Moreau was known for bronze sculptures of human figures and his talent can be seen here from the realism of the man's face to his waistcoat and trumpet. Lecourtier was known for his works depicting animals which can be seen in the floppy ears of the hounds to their wrinkles in their faces. The large composition is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use and adorns a rich patinated bronze finish. Weight 90 pounds. Hippolyte Francois Moreau (1832-1927), was a French sculptor famous for his bronze statuettes of young women. Born in Dijon, France, and son of the renowned sculptor Jean-Baptiste Moreau, he grew up learning from his father’s workshop. As a young man, Moreau moved to Paris to study further under Francois Jouffroy at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts, first exhibiting at the Salon of French artists in 1863 and continuing to show work there until 1914. In both 1878 and 1900, he won medals for his work—large scale, decorative pieces such as vases and statuettes—at the Universal Exposition in Paris. Among his notable sculptures is his 1880 statue of the celebrated French mathematician Alexis Clairaut, which now permanently occupies one of the facades of the City Hall of Paris. He died in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France, and today many of his works are collected in the Museum of Fine Arts in Dijon. Measures: 16"W x 18"D x 31"H
