About the Item

The charming figure done completely in the lost wax method is in a primitive naive style. The male figure is dancing excitedly on a rocky outcrop. His costume of a loose-fitting coat with long flared sleeves flying in space as he dances reveals his large potbelly while his loose-fitting shift girdled at the waist with a large belt flips up to show his legs and bare feet as he dances. The figure is suspended on one leg as he moves and his face is animated and happy. The head is cast separately so that his wild hair and beard are free from the body castings. The clothing is decorated with traditional emblems most often seen on ancient Chinese ritual bronzes, while his hat looks very much like an upside-down lotus leaf. After casting the piece has had a number of applied elements to give it detail as well as chasing and engraving but all still attempting to have an overall appearance of the naivety which permeates the whole. The color of the patina is deep and rich with a nice low luster.

19th Century Tibetan Patinated Bronze Figure of Tara on New Black Base
Located in Hudson, NY
This fine old bronze of Tara was made for the purpose of focusing on the process of meditation regarding her aspects of wisdom and compassion. Crafted in Tibet but nearer to India and its influences this figure is an interesting combination of Hindu and Buddhist art and religion. Originally Tara was conceived as a Hindu mother goddess with the spread of Buddhism she was redesigned sometime after 4th century giving her a new role within the spreading Buddhist religion. This seems to have taken place in Shri Lanka and then spread out and back into India and Tibet thru China. At this time Shri Lanka was a great trading center and was host to many religious aspects, sects and ideals. The figure is cast with many fine details and is patinated in a warm green, brown showing traces of a coppery red color. The bronze content of this figure has a high amount of copper in the smelting giving the bronze a rich internal red color. Seated in lalitasana with her pendent right foot resting on a separately cast Padma or lotus pillow...

In industrial uses, the modern process is called investment casting. An ancient practice, the process today varies from foundry to foundry, but the steps which are usually used in casting small bronze sculptures in a modern bronze foundry are generally quite standardised. Demetre H. Chiparus was born in Romania in 1886, attended school in Italy, then, shortly before World War I moved to Paris. He attended school at the Ecole des Beaux Arts under two talented sculptors Anonin Mercier and Jean Boucher, who provided him the opportunity to learn the trade. He later began to experiment with small bronze sculptures and produce small bronze works, exhibiting his small sculptures and, in 1914, was awarded an honorable mention at the Salon of the Societe des Artistes Francais. Many of Paris’ most affluent began to take notice of his work after World War One and the demand for his sculptures quickly increased. Chiparus was captivated by dancers, in particular influenced by Diaghiley’s Ballets Russes and Leon Bakst’s stage designs. A few of his famous sculptures were Starfish Dancer...
