A large-scale white bisque porcelain putto or cherub statue standing on an ornate bombe plinth by 19th century French ceramicist Gille Jeune. Dating from the 1860s, this statue is over 150 years old. It depicts an infant – known as a cherub or putto – wearing a head band with a swathe of fabric draped over his arm and thigh. He sits upon a tree stump or rock with his arms raised and castanets in his hands. Thanks to its scale and provenance, it is a breath-taking statue for an interior or gallery, both the putto and the plinth inscribed with the maker’s mark ‘Gille Jne, Fabt. Paris’. Gille Jeune, Paris Parisian ceramist Jean-Baptiste Gille (1798-1868) was one of the leading manufacturers of French bisque porcelain - also known as biscuit porcelain - of the 19th century. In 1836, he established his own porcelain factory in Paris under the name ‘Gille Jeune’. His work was displayed in many prestigious exhibitions including London’s 1851 Great Exhibition where he was awarded a prize medal, the 1862 exhibition in London and the Paris exhibition in 1867. Four of his cherub works in the same style and scale reside at Hughenden House in Buckinghamshire as part of the National Trust’s collection. These include two of Gille’s depictions of the four seasons and a putto playing a flute as well as a putto with castanets like this one dating from 1855-1864. Porcelain sculpture created by the Chinese artist Kzeng Jiang for The Guest collection. This version of The Guest is by Kzeng Jiang, the first Chinese artist to join the creative universe of this iconic character. The work of the Shanghai-based designer reflects the contemporary culture of Asia in vibrant, radical illustrations. Kzeng seeks to render his cultural roots through symbols of traditions like Chinese facial painting or flower painting from the Song dynasty, reinterpreting these elements in his own personal style. In this case, for instance, he is portrayed with three big eyes on his face which, according to Kzeng, “allow him to see the past, present and future as if he were a messenger travelling through time.” As regards color, Kzeng chose blue tones on the white porcelain to ensure a sense of visual harmony and balance. 'Achromatic Fold in White II' is a unique sculpture by the British artist Steven Edwards, created from parian porcelain. Steven Edwards is a ceramic artist whose work investigates the language of making through the materiality and physicality of clay. Fascinated by process-led making, he uses traditional techniques that provoke unanticipated outcomes, using clay as a medium that sustains the narrative of the making process. The resulting forms embody his interaction and manipulation of the clay using bespoke tools to explore the intrinsic properties of the material. His creative practice starts by purposely placing clay under stress to reveal the natural tension and movement in its surface and form. Throughout the whole making process, he pushes, pulls, compresses and slices the material to provoke a reaction. The final forms are a combination of these making scenarios, translating a theme of duality in their appearance – the contrast of visual distortion and precision, the stillness and movement in form and the surface deception between synthetic and natural. Whilst challenging and pushing his material to the limits, often using clay bodies in ways they are not designed for, Edwards purposely exploits unexpected outcomes. Creating a sense of unease, during the making his clay cracks and buckles, resulting in permanent scars that illustrate the extremes that have been asked of it. Purely aesthetic, these fissures within the surface are an important counter point to the idealised sugary-hued confectionery layered rings. Edwards has exhibited his work at premiere contemporary design and craft shows including British Ceramics...

Sculptural Vase II, 2023, (Porcelain, C. 8.6 in. h x 8.2 in. diam., Object No.: 4185) Davolio’s sophisticated porcelain works and their organic and natural references are influenced by the Art Nouveau style, the keen interest in the mechanics of futurism, and the minimalist and linear approach typical to Scandinavian Design. In the past 15 years, Davolio has positioned herself as an internationally renowned ceramicist. J. Lohmann Gallery discovered this talented artist in Europe in 2007 and introduced Davolio’s work to the United States in 2008. She has developed a unique oeuvre over several decades that is unparalleled. Her work conveys a deep connection to nature, and in particular to the sea. Davolio herself reveals that she “feels deep devotion and passion while working” and experiences “wonderful peaceful moments when creating something new from raw clay” with her hands. The elaborate porcelain sculptures and vessels suggest organic biomorphic forms, mostly aquatic shapes like coral reefs and undulating leaves. A graduate of The Danish School of Design, Davolio is influenced by the minimalist design aesthetic in Copenhagen, as can be seen in many of the artist’s unique and artistically important creations, in which a series of concentric lamellas emanate from the central column of a vase.
