About the Item

Plaster cast, bust of Antinous from the Capitol on a column, sculpted from a single block. This work is taken from a marble statue of Antinous, preserved in the Capitoline Museum in Rome. Antinous is known as the favorite of the Roman Emperor Hadrian. Deified by the latter, this handsome young man sealed a tragic fate by drowning in the Nile under dubious circumstances. The Swiss thinker, theologian, poet, and writer Gaspard Lavater (1741-1801) described him as follows: "[…] It is the proportion, the harmony of all the features: in a word, both the whole and each part taken separately present us with a man without equal, the inhabitant of a better world, a demigod" (The Art of Knowing Men through Physiognomy / Volume 7 - ed. Depelafol). This sculpture is attached to and rests on an Ionic column with fixed fluting, decorated with four overflowing scrolls. The base, molded with a cove, rests on a square plinth. This ensemble will add charisma to your decor, thanks to the quality of its craftsmanship, its dimensions, and its Greco-Roman style. ******** Period: Late 19th century.
