This exceptionally rare 17th century statuette captures the regal figure of the Roman goddess Minerva. The legendary goddess of war is crafted from highly detailed gilt bronze, with her armor encrusted with deep purple amethysts and other semi precious stones. Standing atop a base of exceptionally rare red agate, she is truly a sight to behold. The quality of these materials is so great that this statuette was certainly made for a client of great wealth and influence, perhaps even royalty. Amethyst is a fitting medium for mythologically-inspired works of decorative art. Because of its resemblance to the color of wine, the ancients associated the gemstone with Dionysus, the Greek god of revelry. Thus, the amethyst was thought to not only prevent drunkenness, but also keep its wearer clear headed and quick witted in both battle and business. That they adorn the goddess of war in this statuette represents these deep-seated, ancient beliefs.
