About the Item

Present Sculpture, 1974 Edition : 2236/5000 Publisher : Luciano Anselmino (Turin) Maker : Giorgio Barutti (Venise) H x W x D : 16.50 cm. x 10.00 cm. x 8.00 cm. 6.5 in. x 3.94 in. x 3.15 in. Handsigned by the artist Very good condition 1921-1974 The work is mentioned in the book “Objet de mon affection”, edited by Philippe Sers, with a preface by Jean-Hubert Martin, Paris 1983. “Present” is undoubtedly one of Man Ray's most emblematic works. After a night of drunkenness with his friend Erik Satie in 1921, the artist decided to buy an iron, upholsterer's nails and glue. He fixed the nails to the flat side of the iron, exhibited his work at Librairie Six and then gave it to one of his Dadaist friends. As fate would have it, the work was stolen. This anecdote and unusual creation prompted Man Ray to produce several reprints of “Present” in the 1960s and 1970s, consolidating its iconic status in art history. Ref : LCD6804
