Frankfurt Faience Blue & White Chinoiserie Bottle Vase, Trumpet Neck, 1680 This rare and early German faience bottle vase is attributed to the Frankfurt manufactory and dates to the last decades of the 17th century. The globular body rises to a slender neck that flares into a trumpet mouth, a form taken directly from the Chinese porcelain bottles that reached Europe in the second half of the 17th century. The vase is painted in a rich underglaze blue on a bright white tin glaze with the chinoiserie landscape for which Frankfurt was celebrated. The scene shows a Chinese figure in long flowing robes seated on a rocky bank and leaning forward, surrounded by stippled rockwork, sprays of grasses and tall broad-leaved banana plants...
