About the Item

This remarkable art glass Lava style vase is a part of Loetz’s Phaenomen Genre 377, the remarkable collection unveiled at the Paris World Exhibition of 1900. The Crete color variation of this particular vase showcases an extraordinary interplay of green, purple, blue and yellow hues that shimmer iridescently. The vase's design, featuring root-like formations encircling its top, is emblematic of the Art Nouveau movement's affinity for natural, organic shapes, a hallmark of Loetz glassware's acclaimed aesthetic. Loetz, a leading producer of exceptional art glass in the Art Nouveau style, is celebrated for its pioneering work with iridescent glass, a field in which it is paralleled chiefly by the esteemed Tiffany Studios. Loetz revitalized an ancient glassmaking technique to produce an iridescent and crackled texture. The technique involved immersing the hot glass object into ice water, which created a network of cracks. These cracks were then re-melted to form a cohesive surface, leading to the Lava illusion. These are among the most highly esteemed and sought-after works of Johann Loetz Witwe. Circa 1900 8” high x 4 1/2” wide x 5“ deep
