Delft Blue and White Baluster Vase, early 18th Century or possibly earlier, painted with blue foliage, in typical imitation of Chinese porcelain style.

A beautiful set of five blue and white Delft vases, this faience collection was hand-painted in Holland, circa 1900. The three bulbous vases are lidded, each with a finial depicting a rampant lion with a ball in its forepaws. Beneath the lion is a mottled background (on the front side only), with a foliate and floral margent. Each vase has the same scene painted on the front of the main body: a couple walking through a field surrounded by flowers. The opposite side has a floral rinceaux above a foliate branch. Painted in a similar fashion, the two concave vases are without lids. The side opposite from the cartouche of the couple has floral margents. All five vases have canted corners on the base. Polychrome Delftware Wall Plaque with Bird and Flower Basket Delft, circa 1750 This antique eighteenth-century Dutch Delftware wall plaque is made of tin-glazed earthenware and painted in blue, green, yellow, iron-red and manganese. The lozenge-shaped plaque has a raised, self-framing border and is pierced at the top with two holes for suspension. The centre is painted with an exotic bird perched among flowering branches rising from a rectangular basket. The flowers and foliage are enclosed within a shaped cartouche outlined in yellow and green scrollwork. Large stylised flower heads interrupt the surrounding blue diaper-patterned ground, while the outer border is decorated with continuous scrolling ornament in blue, yellow and iron-red. The combination of an exotic bird, abundant flowers and geometric patterning reflects the continuing influence of Chinese and Japanese porcelain on mid-eighteenth-century Delftware. Delft painters did not simply reproduce Asian designs, but combined individual motifs with European cartouches, scrollwork and shaped borders to create new decorative compositions. Wall plaques of this type were produced specifically for display. In contemporary household inventories they were sometimes described as porceleine schilderijen, or “porcelain paintings”, reflecting their role as ceramic counterparts to framed paintings. By the eighteenth century, Delft potters increasingly formed plaques in moulds with pronounced outlines and integrated decorative borders, creating complete, self-framed objects for the interior. Frankfurt Faience Blue & White Chinoiserie Bottle Vase, Trumpet Neck, 1680 This rare and early German faience bottle vase is attributed to the Frankfurt manufactory and dates to the last decades of the 17th century. The globular body rises to a slender neck that flares into a trumpet mouth, a form taken directly from the Chinese porcelain bottles that reached Europe in the second half of the 17th century. The vase is painted in a rich underglaze blue on a bright white tin glaze with the chinoiserie landscape for which Frankfurt was celebrated.
