A Very Attractive 18th Century Georgian Mahogany Oval Shaped Open Wine Cooler Retaining Good Colour And Patina, With Original Brass Bound Decoration And Original Brass Handles, Raised On Elegant Original Stand With Square Tapered Legs And Original Brass Castors. It is most unusual for wine coolers of this period to retain their original stand, but that is very much the case with this particular example and the stand itself even retains it's original brass castors at the end its elegant tapered legs. A Fine and Rare Mahogany George III Period Table Wine or Bottle Cooler, c.1790 Of coopered construction, this fine piece is made of mahogany bound together with brass bands, having extremely rare brass Grecian scroll handles. The top, having a useful inset handle, lifts off to allow the section below to be easily emptied and cleaned. That section has copper lined sections to hold the bottles and a lead lined section designed to be filled with ice to chill their contents. Wooden table coolers are much rarer than their silver or porcelain equivalents and far rarer than standalone wine coolers or cellarets. A virtually identical piece, quite possibly the pair to the present example, was sold by Christie's in the Apter-Fredericks stock sale on the 19th of January 2021, making £17,500. Like the Apter-Fredericks piece, another aspect of the present example which makes it so unusual are the curving handles set into the side of the cooler. Usually table coolers have much simpler ring handles. These curving handles are indicative of the neoclassical taste and are seen on some of the Matthew Boulton ormolu perfume burners of the 1770s which may have provided the indirect inspiration for these pieces. Wonderful Early 19th-Century Regency Mahogany Sarcophagus Wine Cooler or Cellarette A superb early 19th-century Regency period mahogany wine cooler, or cellarette, of sarcophagus form, crafted in striking flame Cuban mahogany and retaining its original removable zinc lined interior. Of coffered, architectural design, the piece features reeded and canted corners with inset panelled sides on all four faces, creating a strong, elegant silhouette. It is raised on bold, finely carved lion’s paw feet, and still standing on the original brass castors, allowing it to be moved with ease. Inside, the original zinc (or lead) liner with a pair of brass swan neck handles remains intact, a mark of both quality and authenticity. The overall form, use of richly figured mahogany, and the distinctive carved paw feet are closely associated with leading Regency cabinetmakers such as Gillows of Lancaster London, to whom comparable examples are often attributed. An oval mahogany wine cooler, George III period, circa 1790. With excellent, unrestored, deep, rich color and patination, and original solid-brass carrying handles to either side. This smart Georgian wine cooler (cellaret or cellarette) retains its original waxed surface and patina. It is brass-bound (of coopered construction) supported on its separate, original stand. Raised on square tapering legs terminating in its original brass cappings and castors. It can be also used as a small side table or lamp table. Comes with a bespoke, clear, safety glass cover. Nb. An antique oval wine cooler of this design is quite rare, and makes a very elegant addition to a dining room sideboard, or an occasional table in a drawing room. Stamped to the inner lip 'Holland & Sons'. Holland & Sons Originally founded in 1803 by Stephen Taprell and William Holland, a relation of the architect Henry Holland, the firm of Holland & Sons soon became one of the largest and most successful furniture making companies in the 19th Century. The firm worked extensively for the Royal Family, being granted the Royal Warrant early in the reign of Queen Victoria, hence taking a leading part in the decoration and furnishing of Osborne House, Sandringham, Balmoral, Windsor Castle and the apartments of the Prince and Princess of Wales at Marlborough House. Holland and Sons also worked extensively for the British Government, for whom they executed over three hundred separate commissions, including the Palace of Westminster, the Victoria and Albert Museum, and oversaw the State funeral of the Duke of Wellington.
