Samson Berman Studio Floor Lamp with Integrated Table

About the Item

Custom-made very grand scale (at 7 feet 6 inches tall) and sculptural walnut wood floor lamp with integrated side table from the Flushing, NY studios of Samson Berman Associates, circa 1956. Organic woodcraft with foil edges like on an airplane wing or ship's rudder. Original 1950's design form executed in spirit of studio craft movement. Calls to mind the designs of Philip Lloyd Powell and the New Hope craft school. Walnut tabletop has inlaid brass linear decorations. White double cone diabolo shades on brass armature. This is large and robust enough even to be used as additional seating. Samson Berman was one of the leading lights of cutting edge modern interior design during the 1950s, championed by such luminaries of good taste such as Betty Pepis (NYT Home Editor) who featured and promoted Samson Berman designs throughout the 1950's in The New York Times. Never mass produced, all their furniture designs were bespoke. See similar lamp featured in Betty Pepis "Interior Decoration A to Z". A similar lamp was integrated into one of Samson Berman's platform seating designs. See the last image.
