A newly restored pair of Continental Art Deco high-back lounge chairs in burl walnut and Edelman leather with nailhead detailing, made in Italy c. 1930s.
The chair rests atop a burl walnut plinth with a curved sled leg base separating the plinth from the floor. Satin black lacquer allows the base to all but disappear into the shadow of the chair, imparting a sense that it hovers slightly above the ground.
Antiqued brass nailheads run the perimeter of the base and back, highlighting the curved lines that give the chairs their deco feel.
This pair was last sold three decades ago by a vintage dealer in Hollywood who traced their origin to a train station in Milan. Although we have been unable to definitively identify a designer, they bear strong resemblance to Poltrona Frau’s Model 904 chair, introduced in 1930 and officially renamed the Vanity Fair chair...
