About the Item

This a fantastic English antique Victorian oak conversation sofa which dates from around 1880. It has three individual seats with stylish carved arms and frieze. The settee was made from hand carved solid oak, and has beautiful patterned pink upholstery and stands on carved turned legs and has its original brass castors. In the Victorian times conversation sofas were usually placed in the middle of the room for ladies who could freely engage in conversation with other guests. It is a lovely piece of furniture which is certain to make it a treasured addition to one of the rooms in your home. Condition: You are viewing this item in its excellent original untouched condition. It will be restored before delivery and this is included in the price. The upholstery can be changed if required. Dimensions in cm: Height 79 x Width 114 x Depth 97 Dimensions in inche s: Height 31.1 x Width 44.9 x Depth 38.2 Oak is a tree or shrub in the genus Quercus - Latin "oak tree" having approximately 600 extant species. Oak wood has a density of about 0.75 g/cm3, great strength and hardness, and is very resistant to insect and fungal attack because of its high tannin content. It also has very appealing grain markings, particularly when quartersawn. Oak wood is very durable, easy to maintain and resistant to wear and tear which is why it can be easily handed to the next generations if taken well care of. Oak wood virtually lasts forever and you can still admire oak furniture in museums and palaces even if it was made many centuries ago. Oak has been prized since the Middle Ages for use in interior panelling of prestigious buildings such as the debating chamber of the House of Commons in London and in the construction of fine furniture.
