Baroque Furniture

BAROQUE STYLE

The decadence of the Baroque style, in which ornate furnishings were layered against paneled walls, painted ceilings, stately chandeliers and, above all, gilding, expressed the power of the church and monarchy through design that celebrated excess. And its influence was omnipresent — antique Baroque furniture was created in the first design style that truly had a global impact.

Theatrical and lavish, Baroque was prevalent across Europe from the 17th to mid-18th century and spread around the world through colonialism, including in Asia, Africa and the Americas. While Baroque originated in Italy and achieved some of its most fantastic forms in the late-period Roman Baroque, it was adapted to meet the tastes and materials in each region. French Baroque furniture informed Louis XIV style and added drama to Versailles. In Spain, the Baroque movement influenced the elaborate Churrigueresque style in which architecture was dripping with ornamental details. In South German Baroque, furniture was made with bold geometric patterns.

Compared to Renaissance furniture, which was more subdued in its proportions, Baroque furniture was extravagant in all aspects, from its shape to its materials.

Allegorical and mythical figures were often sculpted in the wood, along with motifs like scrolling floral forms and acanthus leaves that gave the impression of tangles of dense foliage. Novel techniques and materials such as marquetry, gesso and lacquer — which were used with exotic woods and were employed by cabinetmakers such as André-Charles Boulle, Gerrit Jensen and James Moore — reflected the growth of international trade. Baroque furniture characteristics include a range of decorative elements — a single furnishing could feature everything from carved gilded wood to gilt bronze, lending chairs, mirrors, console tables and other pieces a sense of motion.

Find a collection of authentic antique Baroque tables, lighting, decorative objects and other furniture on 1stDibs.

Reredos Fragment, Gilded Wood, circa Second Half of the 17th Century
Located in Madrid, ES
Altarpiece. Wood carved and gilded. Baroque, towards the second half of the 17th century. The Solomonic column was an element already known in the Renaissance (and before) that was popularized in art, in large part, thanks to the Baldachin of St. Peter's Basilica of the Vatican by Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1624-1633), where he presented branches. In Spain, this type can already be seen in the Silver Tabernacle of the Cathedral of Seville (Juan de Alfaro, 15931596), used in altarpieces from the 1620s; nevertheless, the apogee of the Solomonic column will come from the hand of José Benito de Churriguera, whose altarpieces have an extraordinary importance since the second half of the 17th century and already at the beginning of the 18th century (note similarities and differences between the present altarpiece and that of the Convent of San Esteban...

Charming Pair of Austrian 19th Century Polychromed Majolica Wall Sculptures
Located in Los Angeles, CA
A fine and charming pair of Austrian 19th century polychromed majolica hanging wall sculptures of an elderly couple peeking through a window, probably by Friedrich Goldscheider (Goldscheider'sche Porzellan-Manufactur und Majolica-Fabrik.) Each wall sculpture depicting an elderly man wearing glasses and a traditional cap with his arms extended forward as if it was reading a book or a newspaper. The other depicting an elderly lady, also peeking through a window, wearing a laced cap with a bow tie and shawl over her shoulders, her arms are also extended forward as if it was reading a book or a newspaper. The male figure stamped on the back "78 - II ." The lady figure stamped on the back "37 - 79." Vienna, circa 1890-1900. Man's height: 16 1/2 inches (41.9 cm.) Man's width: 13 3/4 inches (34.9 cm.) Depth: 8 1/2 inches (21.6 cm.) Lady's height: 15 1/2 inches (39.4 cm.) Lady's width: 13 3/4 inches (34.9 cm.) Lady's depth: 6 1/2 inches (16.5 cm.) Goldscheider Manufactory and Majolica Factory (German: Goldscheider'sche Porzellan-Manufactur und Majolica-Fabrik, (now) Goldscheider Keramik) is an Austrian ceramic manufactory. In 1885, Friedrich Goldscheider came from the small Bohemian city of Pilsen to Vienna and founded the Goldscheider Manufactory and Majolica Factory. It became one of the most influential ceramic manufactories of terracotta, faience and bronze objects in Austria with subsidiaries in Paris, Leipzig and Florence. For over half a century Goldscheider created masterpieces of historical revivalism, Art Nouveau (Jugendstil) and Art Deco. Famous artists such as Josef Lorenzl, Stefan Dakon, Ida Meisinger and the two perhaps best known Austrian ceramic artists Michael Powolny and Vally Wieselthier worked for Goldscheider. Several of the artists who worked for Goldscheider also worked for other Viennese studios, such as Augarten, Keramos or for the German brands Rosenthal and Meissen. The Goldscheider family emigrated in 1938 to United Kingdom and USA. Walter Goldscheider startet a new factory in Trenton, New Jersey and returned to Vienna in 1950. Marcel Goldscheider went to Stoke-on-Trent and produced figurative ceramics for Myott and opened his own studio in the 1950s in Hanley. Both brothers died in the early 1960s. More than 10,000 different models were created over a period of three generations. Since the very beginning many of these won first prizes and gold medals at innumerable world fairs, exhibitions and trade fairs. Goldscheider figures...

Wedding Chest, Salamanca Area, Spain, 17th Century
Located in Madrid, ES
Wedding chest. Wood, textile, metal, polychrome. Salamanca, Spain, 17th century. Area of rectangular body with flat top made in carved wood that preserves remains of original polychrome, corners and other metal fittings and textile details in certain places. It is decorated to the outside with a molding in its lower area based on curved motifs and a simple carved decoration of vegetable theme arranged according to a rigid symmetry enhancing an inscription in capital letters on the front ("Viva María / Fernandez") allusive to the owner original of the piece. The interior has no decoration or more elements than the parts of the fittings of the corresponding hinges and the wood seen. The model of a flat-topped ark, with a rectangular shape, was very common in Spanish art as early as the Middle Ages, varying in its decorative elements as time and styles progressed. The metallic elements of the furniture (corner corners on red textile, lock shield on the front, hinges on the inside, handles on the sides to move it, etc.) have a decoration of waves and auctions that refers to models of the Baroque, in addition to columns (flanking the keyhole). The carved decoration of the front (flowers, leaves stems and birds simplified posadas, with simple polychrome in three colors -red, green, yellow-) is not too fine (something usual in popular specimens), and follows a composition and very colorful habitual in the popular coffers of the area of Salamanca, being common the use of walnut for its realization (as in all the Spanish furniture, for the resistance of the wood and its abundance then). The addition of a feminine name in capital letters (detail that would indicate that the present piece of furniture is an ark made to keep a wedding trousseau, hence the abundance of decoration in a popular utilitarian piece and the presence of a lock with a key) is another element to be highlighted in this piece of furniture. Similar model is mentioned in one of the most used reference books of the Spanish furniture, ENRIQUEZ ARRANZ, Maria Dolores. The Spanish furniture in the 15th, 16th and 17th century. 1951. p. 39; cat. no. 74; The m. 74; Beautiful example of chest or ark of bridal, popular Spanish style of century XVII...

Giacinti Brandi ( 1621-1691 ) " S. Giovannino " 17th Century with Video
Located in Madrid, ES
Giacinti Brandi ( 1621-1691 ) " S. Giovannino " 17th Century Important Baroque painting attributable to the hand of the great Roman old master Giacinto Brandi. It depicts San Giovannino who, with an expression of rare beauty and intensity, turns his gaze toward us who observe this small masterpiece. Giacinto Brandi (1621 – 19 January 1691) was an Italian painter from the Baroque era, active mainly in Rome and Naples. Born in Rome,he was part of the studio of Alessandro Algardi, a noted sculptor who noted that Brandi was more suited to painting. He joined the studio of Giovanni Giacomo Sementi. He traveled to Naples from 1638, and by 1647 had returned to Rome to work under Giovanni Lanfranco, where Brandi befriended Mattia Preti. The two artists would later on, often collaborate. His works are well distributed among baroque Churches of Rome including San Carlo al Corso ceiling frescoes (1670–1671), San Silvestro in Capite, Sant'Andrea al Quirinale, a canvas of Sant'Andrea (1650) in Santa Maria in Via Lata a painting of Martyrdom of the Forty (1660) for the Chiesa delle Santissima Stimmate di San Francesco a Coronation of the Virgin (1680) which serves as main altarpiece for the church of Gesù e Maria, a canvas of the Drunkedness of Noah in the Galleria Corsini, an Assumption (1655) for Santa Maria in Organo in Verona a fresco from Ovid's Metamorphoses (1651–1653) for Palazzo Pamphilj in Piazza Navona, and a Martyrdom of San Biagio for the church of San Carlo ai Catinari a Visione del beato Giovanni di San Facondo (1656) and a Estasi della beata Rita da Cascia (1660) in the Basilica di Sant'Agostino in Campo Marzio San Rocco intercede per i malati di peste (1673) and San Rocco in gloria (1674) in the Chiesa di San Rocco all'Augusteo; Compianto sul Cristo morto (1675–76) in the Chiesa di Sant'Andrea al Quirinale. In 1647, he joined the Congregazione dei Virtuosi al Pantheon in Rome and from 1651 was inducted into the Accademia di San Luca for painters. In 1663, he frescoed the life of Saint Erasmus...
