Kirman Furniture

KIRMAN STYLE

Antique and vintage Kirman rugs and carpets are named for the southern Iranian city that has been a renowned major center of high-quality carpet production since the 16th century. These furnishings are considered works of art and are celebrated for their fine craftsmanship, sumptuous colors and durability.

This type of Persian carpet is sometimes spelled Kerman, like its place of origin, the capital of the Western Asian country’s Kerman Province. Iran encompasses different cultures, languages and dialects, and its exquisite rugs reflect this diversity.

The different types of Persian carpets are named for the towns, villages and regions where they’re made. Kirman rugs, carpets, wall hangings and other textiles have long been popular with international audiences, including in the early 20th century when they were marketed as Kermanshah carpets. Compared to other Persian rugs, Kirman examples are known for being vividly colored with natural dyes and characterized by a diverse variety of patterns, ranging from arabesques embedded with floral touches and details like deer and lions to overlapping cartouches in a broad palette of rich hues.

Others feature an ornate central medallion, vase shapes, rows of shrubs or a flourishing tree of life created through an asymmetrical knotting technique so that the wool pile on cotton is “double warped.” Some of the more elaborate carpets commissioned from the Kirman workshops in the 18th and 19th centuries included large-scale naturalistic scenes based on European paintings or Gobelin tapestries.

The major workshops of Kerman informed weaving in nearby rural areas such as those created by the Afshar tribe. The international popularity of Kirman carpets, meanwhile, inspired designers across the globe, such as William Morris in England. A leading designer of the Arts and Crafts movement, Morris revived historical techniques such as printed fabrics in the furnishings he created. He owned Kirman carpets and used them as a source for his work.

Both vintage and contemporary rugs influenced by Kirman designs remain in demand for their lavish palette and distinctive patterns. In 2013, a 17th-century Kirman carpet was sold at a Sotheby’s auction for an astounding $33.8 million.

The Whispering Garden: An Antique Persian Kerman Masterpiece of Elegance
Located in Dallas, TX
76737 Antique Persian Kerman Rug, 11'09 x 18'07. Woven in the twilight of the Early 20th century, this hand-knotted wool Persian Kerman rug is an ode to cultivated elegance, capturing the rare harmony of serenity and grandeur. Its soft blue field—gently faded by the passage of time—unfurls like a tranquil garden under misty skies, revealing a continuous all-over botanical design that dances with lyrical grace. This is no mere decorative object; it is a living canvas of Persian romanticism, a textile dreamscape rendered in the language of flowers and vine-scrolls. The exceptional field brims with opulent frondescence: arabesque vinery curves and cascades across the surface in rhythmic sweeps, while palmettes bloom with restrained flourish. Lanceolate leaves shimmer like silk calligraphy, their serrated edges drawn with the precision of a miniature painting. Hyacinth blossoms and floral rosettes float amidst curling tendrils and sickle leaves, creating a celestial garden suspended in a moment of stillness. This Kerman’s compositional balance—ornate yet never overwrought—reveals the masterful hand of a weaver deeply attuned to both discipline and imagination. Its formal Kirman border, wrapped in layered floral meanders and flanked with finely drawn guard bands, introduces a sense of stately enclosure to this flowering tableau. The border is not merely a frame but a ceremonial procession of botanical motifs—like a whispered benediction encircling the soul of the carpet. These elements, rooted in classical Persian design, offer symbolic abundance: the flourishing garden represents not only paradise but also ethical cultivation, endurance, and divine order. As an antique, this extraordinary masterpiece embodies scarcity in its highest form—woven before the modern age diluted the meaning of craft with speed. With each knot tied by hand, it champions the invisible labor and artistic legacy of Kerman’s elite weavers, whose works once adorned royal residences and princely courts. This is an exquisite work of art for connoisseurs who understand that true status is quiet, cultivated, and earned—an heirloom-worthy artwork destined to anchor Neoclassical salons, serene Organic Modern interiors, or refined Regency Revival settings with heritage, prestige, and poetic soul. Rendered in muted hues and variegated shades of pale royal blue, tan, sand, ecru, almond, beige, taupe, camel, glaucous, bluish-grey, and light gray with other accent colors. Distressed. Desirable age wear. Antique wash. Abrash. Hand knotted wool. Made in Iran. Hotel Lobby Size Carpet 12 x 19 Rug...
