Rare George 11 Kettle or Candle Stand Cuban Mahogany with Tripod Base, Ca 1745
Located in Lincoln, Lincolnshire
This is a rare Georgian Kettle or Candle Stand made from mahogany in the early to mid-18th century, George II period, circa 1745 or possibly earlier in the 18th century. Candle stands of this age are rare and hard to find. The piece is very well made of a heavy dense solid mahogany, probably Cuban. The stand has a flat octagonal top with a low gallery which sits above a beautifully turned column pedestal stem on a squat tripod base. The stem is a particularly good feature and is very decorative with a vase baluster and fine ring turned features. The tripod legs are set low (which is a further indication of an earlier 18th century date) and have carved pad feet. The legs have an iron strengthener bracket to the underside which may well be original to the piece, giving the leg construction much greater strength and stability. This piece is stable and structurally strong as well as being very decorative. Dimensions in inches: Height 21.75 Leg width - foot end to adjacent foot end: 18.5 Top: 11~1/8 across the flats, Depth of Top including gallery about 15/16 The gallery lip is about 1/8 inch. This is a very useful and practical piece for the modern home with many uses as a stand for vases, plants, display pieces or simply as an end of sofa, wine or occasional table as per our images showing typical uses. Provenance: For similar tripod stands please see; British Antique Furniture by John Andrews, Page 354 and 355 English Furniture by John C Rogers...
