Jean Varda (1873-1971) born Smyrna, Greece, developed a unique collage style rooted in dada and surrealism but with a child-like air. He moved to Paris in the teens and befriended Picasso, Braque and other titans of the avant grade. He moved to California after the war and developed strong friendships with Henry Miller and Gordon Onslow-Ford, among others, and served as an exponent of European modernism to many northern California artists.
