Printed by the author in 1991 for the exhibition "John Phillips Italian Film" This print is unique in this format.
John Phillips (1914-1996) was a staff photographer for LIFE magazine from 1936 until the late 1950s. He photographed everything from Cecil Beaton's Masked ball to World War II from behind enemy lines in Yugoslavia.
He met King Farouk of Egypt and King Abdullah of Jordan, he chronicled the battle of Jerusalem in 1948 and post war Europe. He is the author of several books, including "Free Spirit on a Troubled World" edited by Scalo.
His battlefield portrait of cartoonist Bill Mauldin was recently chosen by the US Postal Service for a commemorative stamp and his iconic portrait of French poet Antoine de Saint Exupery has adorned everything from IWC special edition watches to french stamps and currency.
Phillips's work is part of the photography collections of the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum in New York, The National Portrait Gallery in Washington DC as well as the Musee' de Elisee in Lausanne, Switzerland.
