About the Item

Sizygium Jambolanum – Java Plum Botanical Lithograph c.1863 This antique botanical print depicts Syzygium cumini, commonly known as the Malabar plum, Java plum, black plum, or jambolan. The lithograph shows a detailed branch laden with clusters of ripening fruits in various stages, from reddish-purple to deep black, hanging gracefully among glossy, broad elliptical leaves with pronounced veins. Below the main illustration are precise scientific drawings showing the flower structure, fruit cross-sections, and seeds, highlighting the botanical characteristics essential for study and classification. This lithograph originates from ‘Fleurs, fruits et feuillages choisis de la flore et de la Pomone de l' Ile de Java peints d'après nature’ by Berthe Hoola Van Nooten, published between 1863 and 1864. Hoola Van Nooten was a Dutch botanical artist who lived in Java (Indonesia) and created this celebrated series to document the rich tropical flora of the island. Her works combined scientific accuracy with artistic elegance and were lithographed in Paris by Severeyns, a master chromolithographer known for producing finely detailed and brilliantly coloured botanical plates. The technique used is chromolithography, a multi-layered colour printing process involving several lithographic stones, each inked with different colours and overlaid with precision to create vivid, lifelike images. This process allowed for the reproduction of botanical illustrations with exceptional clarity, making them both scientifically valuable and highly decorative. Condition summary: Good condition with strong impressions and vivid colours. Minor age-toning and a few small worm holes at the top, but no tears or repairs. Paper remains firm and well-preserved. Framing tips: A warm cream or pale green mount will complement the rich plum tones and lush leaf colours. For framing, choose a simple teak, walnut, or gold frame to enhance its botanical elegance. UV-protective glass is recommended to preserve the delicate chromolithographic pigments over time.
