About the Item

Circa 1940. We offer this Mexican “Butaque” Armchair In the Style of William Spratling Taxco. There is no chair more deeply rooted in Mexican vernacular design than the butaque, a form that instantly evokes hacienda life, shaded patios, and a way of living shaped by tradition and climate. Its low profile and sculptural silhouette are defined by the continuous, flowing line where the leather seat is tensioned and stitched to the wooden structure, achieving a balance between comfort and visual purity. This essential form was embraced by some of the most important cultural figures of Mexico. Artists such as Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera incorporated butaque chairs into their studios and living spaces, valuing them not only for their comfort, but as authentic expressions of Mexican identity and craftsmanship—elements that frequently appear documented in historical photographs of their interiors. The clean and timeless design of the butaque was later reinterpreted by key figures of Mexican modernism such as Luis Barragán and Clara Porset, who elevated the chair into some of the most celebrated expressions of modern Mexican design. Crafted from solid sabino wood and fitted with antique leather, this armchair is a unique, handcrafted piece, made and marked in Taxco, Guerrero, Mexico—a region historically associated with master craftsmanship and the production of finely executed furniture. Taxco is also where William Spratling produced furniture of monumental proportions and exceptional woodworking quality. The chair retains a rich, authentic patina consistent with age and use, enhancing the warmth of the wood and the character of the leather. A compelling example of Mexican vernacular design, where history, modernity, and artisanal mastery converge.

This piece reeks of adventure. Visualize a seated Hemmingway cupping his Daiquiri and recalling his war correspondent days during the Spanish Civil War. Crafted of solid sabino wood, original and patinated by life like Hemmingway, this is a "Butaque" chair by the American-born designer William Spratling. And it was produced in his workshops in Taxco, Mexico, primarily in the 1940s and 1950s. While Spratling is widely known as the "Father of Mexican Silver" for reviving the town's silver industry, he also designed furniture. These chairs were handmade from local Mexican sabino wood...
