Topaz isn't rare. In fact, people have found topaz crystals as large as cars. Usually topaz is colorless or brown. Colorless topaz is irradiated and that gives us the ubiquitous London Blue, Swiss Blue and Sky Blue topaz gemstones that hang in the window of every mall jewelry store in the world. I've been collecting jewelry and gemstones since I was a little kid, but prior to becoming a gemologist I had zero interest in topaz. It was common and, worse, it was irradiated. No thanks. But I studied gemology, I learned there was a different topaz. It came in a vibrant pink color and it was exceedingly rare and it was called imperial topaz. And that's when I became obsessed.
Imperial topaz in this firey pink, copper, and light orange color is exceedingly rare. And precious. And absolutely breathtakingly beautiful.
