16thCentury French Caged DozenRoseCutRockCrystals Amuletic GoldGiltRingPendant
Located in Chicago, IL
This amuletic centuries-old French gold-gilt pendant cages a dozen 7mm-round rose-cut rock crystals with wide uncut girdles and deep 12-facet pavilions, which are tightly set within a transparent metal-framed ring to overlap at the same angle in a sparkling single row. As a perk of its antique age, the verdigris-speckled bronze that surrounds each of the four sections of three crystals enables them to reflect surprising pale yellow and lime light when the pendant is viewed from certain angles. Suggesting its French heritage, the Medieval Frankish culture in northern France made jewelry in similar segmented or openwork shapes of wheels or whorls, which were worn as gem-decorated disk-shaped brooches or gold-caged rock...

16thCentury Renaissance SilverGilt Repousse Romantic Engagement Pendant HatBadge
Located in Chicago, IL
This early 16th-Century Renaissance silver-gilt repousse round medallion pendant features in high relief a romantic cheek-to-cheek and hand-in-hand encounter in a rural flower-field between a standing man and smiling woman wearing European-nobility fashion, including a men's feathered hat, tights and sword. A silversmith was commissioned by this unknown man to make the pendant as a hat-badge to promote an aspect of his character. In this case, the mutual attraction of a blissful adult couple. As there is a church in the distant landscape, this may have been his wedding-engagement announcement. It's worth noting that romantic love via marriage was a rarity before the 18th Century. The tragic romantic Italian legend of Romeo and Juliet was first translated into English for publication in 1562-- several decades before Shakespeare turned it into a famous play about a deadly consequence of separating lovers. The pendant medallion is framed with a filigree-like inward-curving bezel and a flat metal backplate, while its bail is wide enough to be strung with a ring-clasp necklace or pin to be worn as a brooch. A perfect engagement or wedding-shower gift for a man or woman who loves antique...

Antique Crucifix in 835 Silver, Gold Plated with Enamel and Garnet Decoration
Located in Esch-Sur-Alzette, LU
Generally speaking the stamp 835 imprinted on silver is the code for silver items produced in the countries of Belgium, Austria, the Netherlands, Germany and Portugal and it's the old silver mark. This type of silver was used between end of 19th century and begining of 20th century to mint coins, create silverware and jewelry. This ancient crucifix has a Renaissance style and it's gold-plated. The term crucifix refers to a cross with Jesus on it. The beauty of this pendant lies in the amazing relief work done on the front and in the enamel finish. The four ends of the crucifix are decorated with cabochon-cut garnets. This antique crucifix...

Renaissance Early 17th Century Enamelled 22K Gold Rose Cut Garnet Ring
Located in Woking, GB
A stunning and rare example of a European renaissance ring dating to circa 1600! It would have originally been worn by a young women of a wealthy and noble family. The tear-drop shaped bezel is encircled by multiple cuffs enamelled in white. Intricate chased scrolled detailing continues down the shoulders with further evidence of enamelling. In the centre rests a rose cut closed back garnet gemstone (a later replacement). UK size G / US size 3.5, 1.79g, tested as 22k gold. The stone measures 4mm across. As the garnet stone replacement is not the perfect shape for the pear-shaped bezel, it could be easily replaced to a stone of your choice by a local jeweller! During the Renaissance, finger rings developed from the simple forms of the medieval period into miniature works of art, combining the skills of the chaser, engraver, enameller and stone...

Hunter Pocket Watch, Elaborately Painted Enamel, The Dial Marked Omega
Located in London, GB
A very rare decorative beautiful enamel cultured seed pearl, full-faced Hunter pocket watch, with OMEGA stamped on the dial circa. 1894 -1912, probably aimed at the export market. The ingenuity of the artisan enamelers behind this lavishly decorated pocket watch is what stands out the most. The enamel seems to be painted on either side with old masters—a figure of a woman in period dress on one side and the other side with a reproduction of “An Allegory of Venus and Cupid and A Triumph of Venus” by painter Agnolo Bronzino (1503-1572). The painting displays the ambivalence, eroticism, and obscure imagery that are characteristic of the Mannerist period and is exquisitely executed. When the watchmaking industry began to boom in the 19th Century, pocket watches became the must-have tool for everyday people seeking function and style. By 1894, the most discerning customers wanted to have the very best pocket watch available, and the name OMEGA was synonymous with luxury and quality. We know the dial is in the OMEGA style and not the original, but still of some beauty and age because the forerunner of OMEGA, La Generale Watch Co, was founded at La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland in 1848 by Louis Brandt, who assembled key-wound precision pocket watches from parts supplied by local craftsmen. He sold his watches from Italy to Scandinavia by way of England, his chief market. In 1894, his two sons Louis-Paul and César developed a revolutionary in-house manufacturing and total production control system that allowed component parts to be interchangeable. Watches developed with these techniques were marketed under the OMEGA brand of La Generale Watch Co. By 1903 the success of the OMEGA brand led La Generale Watch Co to spin off the OMEGA brand as its own company, and the OMEGA Watch Co was officially founded in 1903. There are also two important periods for enamel pocket watches: the first quarter of the 1600s and the two decades from 1800 to 1820. From 1800 onward, requests started coming in from China. This era saw the emergence of pocket watches and replicas made for export, some with complicated musical movements and mechanical actions whose functions were exaggerated and made visible so that buyers could marvel at their intricacy. This is an absolutely gorgeous decorative piece and is sold on its skilful enamel paintings. Enamelling is the process of decorating metallic plates in order to turn them into works of art, which takes an exorbitant amount of time to do. The pocket watch boasts an impressively large 5 cm diameter. The pale cream off-white enamel has the Swiss OMEGA symbol with Roman numerals and is signed OMEGA 1882. The circular banding design around the face of the watch is symbolic of OMEGA pocket watches of that period. The gold gilt Hunter casing is also inscribed with the OMEGA symbol. The front and back of the pocket watch are both framed with cultured seed pearl stones throughout, adding a unique touch to this lovely pocket watch. ------------------------------ Condition Report: Very Good. The enamel is intact with no signs of any deterioration. Minor scratching inside the case. 5 cm (Diameter). Our certified British Horological Institute member watchmakers inspect each watch before shipment, including final servicing, cleaning, and polishing. ------------------------------ ------------------------------ Provenance: Private collection. From a well-known independent reputable antique...
