Exquisite museum quality antique reticulated polychrome enamel, natural pearl 14K gold Renaissance Revival cross necklace.
19th Century
A rare find- a polychrome enamelled double sided gold cross with the original polychrome enamelled gold chain. Highly complex workmanship of cobalt blue, turquoise, ochre red, white and green enamel- each of the five colors requiring a separate firing process. The gold work is hand wrought in very fine detail. The cross is enamelled on both sides but with different techniques: the front side with enamelling in the background and gold reticulation applied atop; the back side using the opposite technique of a textured gold background and enamelled design applied atop, beautifully embellished with natural pearls in the Renaissance manner. Original reticulated enamel bale. The gold and polychrome enamel reticulated chain is a masterpiece- each link is connected via a quatrefoil flower of turquoise and cobalt enamel; three distinctively designed types of links comprise the chain- an elongated scrolled link, a stylized quatrefoil link with a floral center and a scrolled circular link with leaf elements. Each link enamelled on the front side and finely engraved on the back allowing the wearer the choice to wear this piece in two ways.
Tested for 14K gold
Very good condition commensurate with age, age appropriate wear and very minor losses to the enamelling observed under 10X magnification.
