This vintage French Limoges porcelain box was designed by American artist Fleur Cowles in 1975 as part of the Jardin de Fleurs collection produced by Raynaud Limoges for Denby Ltd. The Cowles, Denby, and Raynaud collaboration is a particularly interesting example of 1970s artist-designed porcelain, bringing together the work of an American artist living in Britain with Denby's British design tradition and the craftsmanship of an esteemed French Limoges porcelain manufacturer. The Denby/Raynaud porcelain project was part of a broader presentation of Cowles' work in 1975. A Cowles print, Tiger and the Parrot, was included in a traveling exhibition associated with the introduction of Denby/Limoges porcelain, placing the Jardin de Fleurs collection within the context of her work as an established painter and illustrator. The circular porcelain box features transfer decoration incorporating the characteristic botanical imagery seen in Cowles' work, with richly colored blue, pink, and magenta flowers and butterflies arranged across the lid and the exterior of the base.
