Impasse at the End of Fantasy

The scene depicts an irreconcilable impasse between two lovers occupying separate positions. Each position reflects a particular tendency caught up in a unique (yet familiar) expression of a gendered logic. The feminine subject watches from a short distance as the masculine figure walks away, chained to a baby and expunging smoke from their head. The baby reaches up toward the feminine subject in a desire for maternal comfort, as the feminine subject pays no attention to it. In psychoanalysis, when an intimate relationship ends an unconscious fantasy possibly also comes to an end. In one expression, as the relationship reaches its conclusion, the masculine subject is infantilized and fettered by the leftover experience of being like a baby to their lover. Whereas the feminine subject initially identifies with, and even accepts the authority of maternal care, only for it to in excess become ambivalent repulsion by its rigid unevenness, signaling the end of fantasy. The work was entirely created in 3D, using fluid simulation to produce the smoke volumes as well as hair simulation for the feminine subject.

Yebu-Tonu (yebutonu) is a 3D artist from Toronto, Canada currently living in Berlin. Originally starting his career-path in neuroscience, he researched rodent psychopharmacology and human brain mapping. After withdrawing from graduate school, his academic experiences became the pulsion toward new horizons, asking questions that cut across technical art and the subject.Self-taught with only a professional background in the sciences, Yebu-Tonu began experimenting with a variety of digital art methods until he found his calling in 3D. Inspired by certain themes in psychoanalysis, Yebu-Tonu became interested in the "conversation" between figures compositionally to "tell" a story or drama. Today, his work experimentally interrogates with volatile bodies, fantasy, unconscious theatre, and points of impossibilities from a subjective position.
