Mesa Residence

Family Home by RIOS in Santa Monica, CA

This experimental hillside house nestles in the treetops, looking out to the Pacific Ocean. Designed by Cigolle X Coleman in 1992, a young family purchased the home and hired asked us to design a top-to-bottom renovation. The original glass, steel, and concrete finishes are still apparent, but they're softened by warm colors, luxurious furnishings and fabrics, and oil-rubbed bronze fireplaces. We introduced hand-scraped European white oak floors throughout, and installed a jewel-like chandelier that cascades down the central staircase, uniting all three levels. This central core is anchored by a bespoke onyx wine cellar, while the custom-built bar in the adjacent living room floats against a dramatically backlit translucent onyx wall. Some of the most dramatic transformations are in the downstairs master suite. We removed cabinetry walls to create a sitting room and tucked the travertine-lined master bath against a glass wall to open it to the bedroom and the outdoors.
