Upper West Side Duplex

Apartment by Purvi Padia Design in New York, NY

Located in a pre-war building on the Upper West Side, the approach to this space balances traditional and contemporary elements in a warm, transitional design for a growing family. We were inspired by our clients’ Indian heritage and love of timeless materials such as caned wood, marble and velvet. By incorporating select antique pieces, Turkish rugs and brass finishes with contemporary furnishings, lush fabrics and striking contemporary lighting, we created a unique and sophisticated interior that reflects a modern, uptown lifestyle.

Throughout the space, we used textured wall coverings and vivid artwork to highlight the home’s architectural details such as the picture moldings and curved staircase. The marriage of classic and modern is on full display in the living room cases where 19th century Indian temple oil lamps juxtapose a minimalist pendant sconce. The dining room includes a custom cabinet designed to fit the space perfectly. Bespoke head chairs in an updated ikat silk with platinum fringe add a dose of drama. The master bedroom features some of my favorite pieces—a pair of 1940s marble-topped bombe commodes with subtle floral marquetry and bronze accents. The modern curves in the tufted velvet chaise lounge are classic with a contemporary twist—a beautiful representation of this comfortable, chic home.
