Aubusson tapestry is tapestry manufactured at Aubusson, in the upper valley of the Creuse in central France. The term often covers the similar products made in the nearby town of Felletin, whose products are often treated as "Aubusson". The industry had probably developed since soon after 1300 in looms in family workshops, perhaps already run by the Flemings that are noted in documents from the 16th century. Aubusson tapestry of the 19th century managed to compete with the royal manufacture of Gobelins tapestry and the privileged position of Beauvais tapestry, although generally regarded as not their equal. As with Flemish and Parisian tapestries...

76928 Late 19th-Century Antique French Aubusson Verdure Tapestry, 04'02 x 06'10. This hand-woven silk and wool late 19th-century French Aubusson verdure tapestry captures the cultivated serenity of the French countryside, rendered with a softness reserved for aristocratic interiors and grand maisons. Created during a period when Aubusson ateliers mastered the art of pictorial storytelling, this extraordinary masterpiece feels less like décor and more like a window into a gentler world. Its presence carries quiet authority, the kind associated with salons, libraries, and country estates curated with confidence and restraint. The central landscape unfolds as a layered pastoral scene—rolling ground punctuated by dense foliage, flowering shrubs, and roaming fauna nestled among trees and grasses. Birds and animals appear not as focal declarations, but as integral elements of a balanced ecosystem, reinforcing the verdure tradition’s devotion to harmony between nature and human contemplation. The scene invites stillness, offering visual depth that rewards prolonged viewing rather than immediate impact. Encircling the exceptional composition, an elegant floral scroll and bird border flows seamlessly into the pictorial field, dissolving the boundary between frame and landscape. This integration is a hallmark of refined Aubusson design, where ornamentation enhances narrative rather than competing with it. Beyond this, an outer zigzag chevron border introduces rhythm and contrast, adding a subtle architectural cadence that enlivens the overall composition without disturbing its tranquility. The palette is exquisitely nuanced—variegated browns moving from deep chocolate to sun-warmed sand, softened by ecru, taupe, pale green, sage, slate blue, old gold, and muted florals of rose, lavender, and red. These tones evoke the shifting light of late summer and early autumn, lending the exquisite work of art an atmospheric richness that feels both grounded and poetic. To own this Aubusson verdure is to claim a piece of European decorative history—an object of prestige, rarity, and cultivated taste that transforms any interior into a sanctuary of timeless elegance. With its commitment to tradition and heart full of whimsy, this antique Aubusson wall hanging...

French Landscape Tapestry Probably Beauvais, circa 1750 7'3 x 9'3
French Landscape Tapestry Probably Beauvais, circa 1750 7'3 x 9'3

French Landscape Tapestry Probably Beauvais, circa 1750 7'3 x 9'3

Located in New York, NY

French landscape tapestry probably Beauvais, circa 1750. Although not a product of the Royal Gobelins factory in Paris, this pictorial landscape tapestry is extremely Fine with silk highlights. The French royal tapestry works in the Gobelins made masterpieces for the crown. For the nobility and bourgeoisie, Beauvais was the source for attractive wall hangings in all sizes, degrees of fineness and subject matters. Rural scenes particularly appealed to urban collectors. Here two white geese cavort under a sandy bluff. The hillock is framed on each side by trees, one a blasted trunk, and topped by a picturesque rustic windmill. Realistically depicted flowers, overhanging grasses and luxuriant foliage give a summer air to the image. In addition, a startled bird, flies up to the right. The border is a trompe l’oeil gilt picture frame with corner bosses and low relief “carving”. The weave is quite Fine and is executed in wool with copious silk details. Although Jean Pillement...

Located in Surfside, FL

WEISBUCH, Claude. Oil on Canvas Framed size: 39” H x 28” W Canvas, without frame: 32” high x 21 ¼” wide. Carved wooden frame with antique gold-leaf finish Claude Weisbuch, 1927-2014 French painter, draftsman and engraver. He studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts (School of Fine Arts) in Nancy and upon graduation became a professor of engraving at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de of St. Etienne. His first solo exhibition was in 1957. In 1968 , he became a full member of the Society of French Painters-Engravers . In 1997 he was awarded the Legion of Honor His work is essentially devoted to engraving, by which he likes to translate, thanks to the line, the life, movement and character of his characters: Punchinels, harlequins, musicians or equestrian scenes. He practices various techniques ( lithography, drypoint etching etc.) that he puts to use in the illustration of bibliophile books. Claude Weisbuch is also a painter and draftsman. His favorite colors are ochres, browns and whites, with which he seeks to introduce the effects of light by compositions where the line and finesse of the drawing preserve the life found in his engravings. His precise and dynamic line delivers a moving and swirling work on themes he loves: theater, opera, equestrian, musicians, card players, Kabuki dancers and many portraits. His works have the appearance of unfinished sketches mixing few colors but a great vivacity of the line. He illustrated many limited edition signed fine art books. Green Borghese Sofa, Noé Duchaufour Lawrance

By Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance

Located in Geneve, CH

Borghese is a light sofa inspiredby the stone pines of the Villa Borghese gardens in Roma. The metal structure reproduces the network of branches and supports the back cushions, the whole draws a comfortable landscape. Color scale: Borghese is available in a selection of colors chosen by the designer, used either in a single colour version, or as a combination of four colors Dimensions, volume and weight Height 33.5 inches Length 74 inches Width 32.7 inches Weight 143 lbs Materials and construction: Black grained mat lacquered steel structure. High density polyurethane foam. Upolstery 100% wool. Biography Not wishing to simply produce or be rational about a product, Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance prefers that each of his projects has its own unique scenario, nourished without distinction between uses, forms, materials or aesthetics. For him, curves and straight lines, sensuality and strictness interact in confrontations that are conducive to create meaning and awaken our senses. Through his desire to breath life into both the objects and spaces he designs, Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance views each project as an organic form that will grow over time with its user, almost like a natural element that can Challenge human order or disorder. Originally, Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance was a sculptor, preoccupied with each work he created by a story and intimate link with nature that he felt the need to retranscribe by using his hands. But soon the IDEA of stirring emotions in others by creating useful forms became an evident path for someone who loves the beautiful as much as the functional and harmony as much as social responsibility. So he turned to design. Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance often compares his approach to tsubo niwa, the tiny garden at the centre of a traditional Japanese house. Like an organic pulse in a profession dedicated to meeting the demands of an industry, a market or a specific client, he is as ready to design objects with inspired lines for manufacturers (Bernhardt Design, Ceccotti Collezioni, Cinna, Ligne Roset, La Chance, Petite Friture, Tacchini, Zanotta.) as he is to imagine harmonious living areas (Senderens, Air France Lounges, Ciel de Paris, Meurice Oenotheque, Transumance Chalet, #Cloud Paris lounge) or even to define a product image or showcase for a famous brand (Paco Rabanne, YSL Beauty, Perrier-Jouët,). Thus in 2015 Montblanc associated its name with Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance, entrusting him with the architectural plans of the company’s 500 boutiques worldwide. His unique approach has led him to conceive exceptional objects that have been presented in the Pierre bergere gallery in Brussels and the BSL gallery in Paris. He has participated in prestigious events like the AD Interiors exhibition at Paris’ Musée des Arts Decoratifs in 2013 and more recently, the AD collections exhibition, also in Paris. His creative meanderings have led him to initiate a collaboration with the Neal Feay workshop in the United States and also to work with two royal factories in France: Mobilier National (National Furniture) and the Manufacture de Sevres (ceramics). The latter two endeavors combine his contemporary vision of design with the finely-honed skills of master craftsmen that were used in the 18th century. His approach has been acclaimed by the French and international press and he has received many prizes including NeoCon Silver 2016 for his Modern Family collection for Bernhardt Design, the 2015 Via Label, the 2014 Janus business prize for the Air France Salons, the GQ Best Designer prize in 2012, the prestigious Red Dot prize for Best Product in 2011 and both the Elle Decoration International Design Prize and Wallpaper Design Award in 2009. With his innate fondness for Art Nouveau, he relies not only on the universal character of nature to impose shapes that make sense but believes that the IDEA of a total, multidisciplinary art is vital for contemporary creation. This exquisite lithograph after Jean Lurcat (1892–1966), titled Pieuvre Persique (Persian Octopus), from Geographie animale (Animal Geography), originates from the January 22, 1975 issue published by Production Edito-Service S.A., Geneve in collaboration with Andre Gonin, Lausanne, and M. Jean Graven, Paris, and printed by Edito-Service S.A., Italy, 1975. This visionary composition reflects Lurcats mastery of the lithographic medium, embodying his poetic imagination through fluid line, expressive form, and a luminous sense of movement. The work conveys the artists unique ability to merge symbolism, nature, and emotion into a cohesive visual language, transforming even the simplest subject into a deeply evocative and dreamlike image. Infused with lyricism and spiritual resonance, the composition exemplifies Lurcats enduring exploration of mythology, cosmic order, and the transcendent power of art. The piece forms part of Geographie animale (Animal Geography), a landmark publication that documents and celebrates one of the most significant aspects of his graphic oeuvre. Executed as a lithograph on bouffant des Papeteries de Hauteville paper, this work measures 12.4 x 9.37 inches (31.5 x 23.8 cm). Unsigned and unnumbered as issued. The edition exemplifies the superb craftsmanship of the Edito-Service atelier, renowned for its refined European printing collaborations. Artwork Details: Artist: After Jean Lurcat (1892–1966) Title: Pieuvre Persique (Persian Octopus), from Geographie animale (Animal Geography), January 22, 1975 Medium: Lithograph on bouffant des Papeteries de Hauteville paper Dimensions: 12.4 x 9.37 inches (31.5 x 23.8 cm) Inscription: Unsigned and unnumbered as issued Date: 1975 Publisher: Production Edito-Service S.A., Geneve in collaboration with Andre Gonin, Lausanne, and M. Jean Graven, Paris Printer: Edito-Service S.A., Italy Condition: Well preserved, consistent with age and medium Provenance: From Geographie animale (Animal Geography), published by Production Edito-Service S.A., Geneve, 1975 Notes: Excerpted from the folio (translated from French), This edition of the Animal Geography by Jean Lurcat was established by publisher Andre Gonin in Lausanne, with the collaboration of Mr. Jean Graven. The lithographs were taken in the workshops of the Graphic Arts J.- E. Wolfensberger in Zurich, under the personal direction of the artist. The stones were sanded after the draw. The text, in Caslon character, body twenty, was composed and printed in Geneva, on velin pur fil a la forme des papeteries du Marais, by the master printer Andre Kundig with the help of Marc Barraud and Auguste Griess. The final to shot was given the iron June 1948. This second edition, 23.8 x 31.5 cm, was drawn with the authorization of Andre Gonin on Velin bouffant des Papeteries de Hauteville. About the Publication: Geographie animale (Animal Geography) stands as one of the most imaginative printed projects associated with Jean Lurcat, uniting visual invention, literary wit, and refined European craftsmanship in a richly conceived publication devoted to the symbolic world of animals. Originally conceived under the guidance of publisher Andre Gonin and later issued in this authorized 1975 edition by Production Edito-Service S.A. of Geneve in collaboration with partners in Lausanne and Paris, the publication reflects the enduring appeal of Lurcats bestiary imagery and philosophical approach to nature. The lithographs were prepared in the workshops of J.- E. Wolfensberger in Zurich under the artists personal supervision, demonstrating the close relationship between artist and printer that characterized the finest twentieth century illustrated editions. More than a portfolio of images, Geographie animale (Animal Geography) is a meditation on the animal kingdom as metaphor, presenting creatures as emblems of instinct, wisdom, humor, vigilance, and cosmic order. Through its union of image, typography, and material elegance, the publication remains an important testament to the vitality of postwar European graphic art and to Lurcats singular ability to merge intellect, decoration, and poetic symbolism. About the Artist: Jean Lurcat (1892–1966) was a pioneering French painter, ceramicist, and tapestry master who transformed the ancient art of tapestry into a modern, intellectual, and spiritual medium, establishing himself as one of the most original and influential artists of the 20th century. Born in Bruyeres, France, Lurcat studied in Nancy and Paris, where he became part of the avant-garde circle that included Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray. His early paintings reflected the influence of Post-Impressionism, Cubism, and Symbolism, but his true innovation came when he reimagined tapestry as a form of monumental art rather than decorative craft. Profoundly inspired by the medieval Apocalypse of Angers tapestry, he sought to revive the grandeur of weaving by fusing ancient techniques with modernist abstraction and symbolism. In the 1930s, working with the Aubusson and Gobelins workshops, Lurcat revolutionized the process of tapestry-making by introducing a precise color notation system and standardizing thread palettes, allowing artists to maintain creative control from conception to completion. His bold compositions radiant with color, geometric rhythm, and allegorical imagery embodied a philosophy of cosmic balance and human resilience. After World War II, Lurcats work deepened in moral and spiritual scope, culminating in his monumental cycle Le Chant du Monde (The Song of the World, 1957–1965), a humanist response to the destruction of war and one of the greatest artistic achievements of the postwar era. His art, characterized by suns, moons, mythic creatures, and symbolic geometry, reflected his belief that art should harmonize intellect, craft, and emotion while reconnecting humanity to the natural and divine order. A contemporary and peer of Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray, Lurcat shared their passion for abstraction and innovation while extending it into the tactile, enduring world of textile art. His influence resonated with later artists and designers such as Fernand Leger, Sonia Delaunay, Le Corbusier, and Victor Vasarely, whose integration of color and geometry echoed his ideas. His work is preserved in major collections including the Musee Jean Lurcat et de la Tapisserie Contemporaine in Angers, the Musee d’Art Moderne de Paris, and the Centre Pompidou. The highest auction record for Jean Lurcat was achieved by Apocalypse Tapestry, which sold for $290,500 USD at Sotheby’s, Paris, on May 29, 2014, underscoring his enduring legacy as the visionary who redefined tapestry as a cornerstone of modern art. Located in Long Island City, NY, NY

An Important Italian Kingwood and Patinated Bronze Figural Console Table. Indulge in the pinnacle of Italian craftsmanship with this extraordinary Italian Kingwood, Marble, and Patinated-Bronze Figural Console Table—an exquisite masterpiece resonating with the opulence of the late 19th century. The serpentine Breccia di Sciro marble top, cradled within an intricate ormolu and kingwood frame, serves as the crowning glory, setting the stage for an extraordinary display of artistry. The base, a testament to the visionary Ludovico Pogliaghi of Milan, elevates this console table to the realm of sculptural poetry. Departing from convention, a young triton assumes a dynamic pose, ready to gracefully spring forward, replacing the traditional supporting figures found in 17th-century Venetian serving tables. This reinterpretation not only defies expectations but introduces a kinetic elegance, with the triton standing proudly on a scrolling foliate base that seamlessly transitions into a shaped foot supported by dignified bun feet. This console table is a harmonious blend of historical homage and contemporary sophistication. In its design, one can discern echoes of Pogliaghi's prior work, such as a comparable table sold Christies London, 19 March 2009, lot 83 (GBP 205,250) featuring a kneeling river God supporting a silver tray—an exquisite piece of Milanese heritage. Beyond its aesthetic allure, this table encapsulates the essence of grandeur that once graced the noble households of Milan. 31" high x 47" wide x 25" in. deep Provenance: Private American Collection Solomon Treasure...

A Flute Serenade: Late 19th Century French Pastoral Tapestry of Rococo Elegance

By François Boucher

Located in Dallas, TX

74030 Rare Antique French Aubusson Tapestry, 04’04 x 10’02. Evoking the splendor of France’s Rococo age, this handwoven wool antique French tapestry is an exquisite vision of romance, artistry, and timeless grace. Woven in the late 19th century, it draws inspiration from the pastoral tableaux of François Boucher, whose idyllic depictions of courtly leisure and bucolic charm defined the spirit of the era. Here, a young woman strolls behind a gallant flutist along a sun-dappled woodland path—an intimate moment caught in silk and wool, imbued with the tender lyricism of a love song whispered through the French countryside. Every thread speaks of heritage, mastery, and the kind of effortless elegance that only centuries of refinement could produce. The tranquil scene is a study in pastoral poetry: soft foliage, muted sunlight filtering through trees, and the rustling quiet of a timeless afternoon. The dreamlike color palette—dusty rose, celadon, gold, and faded umber—conveys the patina of history while radiating a romantic luminosity that feels alive even today. This is not simply an artifact of French décor; it is a living artwork, woven with emotion, movement, and musicality. The one-of-a-kind composition unfolds like a painting by Watteau or Fragonard—an ode to the pleasures of nature, beauty, and human connection. The craftsmanship reveals the hand of a master weaver trained in the grand Aubusson and Gobelins tradition, where textile art transcended function to become a mark of nobility. Each precious weave captures tonal nuance and painterly shading with breathtaking precision—a feat achieved only by ateliers devoted to the highest standards of European artistry. This tapestry once would have graced the walls of aristocratic salons and manors, its presence signaling sophistication, education, and cultured taste. Today, its survival stands as a testament to both its quality and its enduring charm. To own such an exquisite work of art is to inherit a fragment of France’s artistic legacy—a portal to a world of refinement and reverie. This antique pastoral tapestry...

Daniel Marot or Daniel Marot the Elder (1661–1752) was a French-born Dutch architect, furniture designer and engraver at the forefront of the classicizing Late Baroque Louis XIV style. He worked for a long time in England and the Dutch Republic, where he was naturalised in 1709. Born in Paris, he was a pupil of Jean Le Pautre and the son of Jean Marot, who was also an architect and engraver. Marot was working independently as an engraver from an early age, making engravings of designs by Jean Bérain, one of Louis XIV's official designers at the Manufacture des Gobelins, where far more than tapestry was being produced. The family were Huguenots and were part of the wave of émigrés who left France in the year of the Edict of Fontainebleau and Revocation of the Edict of Nantes (1685) to settle in Holland. Daniel Marot brought the fully developed court style of Louis XIV to Holland, and later to London. In the end, the English style which is loosely called "William and Mary" owed much to his manner. In the Dutch Republic, Marot was employed by the Stadthouder, who later became William III of England; in particular, he is associated with designing interiors in the palace of Het Loo, from 1684 on. Though his name cannot be attached to any English building (and he does not have an entry in Howard Colvin's exhaustive Dictionary of British Architects) we know from his own engraving that he designed the great hall of audience for the States-General at the Hague. He also decorated many Dutch country-houses, introducing the “salon” and popularizing ornamented ceilings in The United Provinces/ Netherlands. State bed, designed by Daniel Marot, engraving, ca 1702 In 1694, he traveled with William to London, where he was appointed one of his architects and Master of Works. In England his activities appear to have been concentrated at Hampton Court Palace, where he designed the garden parterres, which were swept away in the following generation and have been restored at the end of the 20th century. His designs for the Great Fountain Garden survive. Much of the furniture, especially the mirrors, guéridons and state beds, in the new State Rooms readied for William at Hampton Court bears unmistakable traces of his authorship; the tall and monumental embroidered state beds, with their plumes of ostrich feathers, their elaborate valances and cantonnieres agree very closely with his later published designs. After William's death Marot returned to Holland where he lived at the Noordeinde 164 in The Hague from 1720 until his death in 1752. The house with his salon, kitchen, hallway and possibly some of his ceilings still exists. We owe much of our knowledge of his work to the folio volume of his furniture designs published at Amsterdam in 1712. Not surprisingly the designs show strong French and Dutch influences; what reads as their "English" look is more probably the result of Marot's court style on other London designers. Marot was a nephew of Pierre Gole...
