Balkans & Ottoman Europe Map with Athens Inset – Nieuwe Hand-Atlas, 1876

Located in Langweer, NL

Balkans & Ottoman Europe Map with Athens Inset – Nieuwe Hand-Atlas, 1876 This impressive 19th-century map titled “Turkije in Europa, Griekenland, Roemenië, Servië en Montenegro” provides a richly detailed view of the Balkan Peninsula and the remaining European territories of the Ottoman Empire during a critical historical moment. Published in 1876 in the Nieuwe Hand-Atlas der Aarde in haren Tegenwoordigen Toestand by M. Frijlink, revised by A. van Otterloo and printed by D. Noothoven van Goor in Leiden, this map captures the political and geographical landscape of the Balkans just before the Russo-Turkish War (1877–78) and the subsequent Treaty of Berlin reshaped the region. The map spans from the Adriatic Sea to the Black Sea, and from the Danube valley down to Crete, covering modern-day Greece, Albania, North Macedonia, Bulgaria, Romania, Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Thrace, European Turkey, and the Aegean Islands. Hand-colored boundary lines clearly distinguish political units including the Kingdom of Greece, the Principality of Serbia, the United Principalities of Wallachia and Moldavia (Romania), and Ottoman provinces such as Rumelia, Thessaly, Epirus, and Macedonia. Major cities—Constantinople (Istanbul), Athens, Bucharest, Belgrade, Sofia, Salonika (Thessaloniki), Skodra, Ioannina, Larissa, Adrianople (Edirne), Varna, and Trabzon—are identified with fine engraving work. The map also reflects the complex geography of the region, showing mountain chains such as the Balkans, Pindus, Rhodope, and Dinaric Alps, as well as large river systems including the Danube, Morava, Drina, Vardar, Maritsa, and Iskar. Inset maps provide valuable additional context: one illustrates the Bosphorus and surrounding fortifications, another focuses on Athens and Piraeus, and a third presents the region around the Gulf of Salonika and Northern Greece. These allow a closer look at strategic locations central to 19th-century European geopolitics. This plate captures the Balkans at a moment of transition, when national movements were rising and the Ottoman Empire was gradually losing influence. The elegant engraving, refined typography, and harmonious composition are characteristic of Dutch educational cartography at its peak. Today, the map serves as a historical snapshot of a region defined by shifting borders, cultural layers, and emerging nation-states. Condition Report: Good condition with gentle toning and scattered small foxing marks, mostly in the margins. Original center fold as issued. Image clean and well-printed with soft, even hand-coloring. No tears, losses, or repairs. Framing Tips: A light ivory or cream mat works beautifully to highlight the delicate color washes. A slim dark wood or black frame adds contrast and sophistication. Because the map includes attractive insets, a slightly wider mat border enhances balance and readability. Suitable for libraries, studies, travel-themed interiors, and collectors of Ottoman, Greek, and Balkan cartography. Keywords: Balkans, Ottoman Empire, Turkey in Europe, European Turkey, Greece, Athens, Piraeus, Macedonia, Thrace, Epirus, Thessaly, Crete, Aegean Sea, Bulgaria, Sofia, Varna, Plovdiv, Romania, Bucharest, Wallachia, Moldavia, Danube, Serbia, Belgrade, Montenegro, Cetinje, Albania, Skodra, Ioannina, Thessaloniki, Salonika, Constantinople, Istanbul, Bosphorus, Dardanelles, Adriatic Sea, Aegean Islands, Balkan Peninsula, 19th century Balkans map, 1876 Ottoman map...

Artistic Arts and Crafts Wrought Iron Standard Floor Lamp, signed L. Van Boeckel
Artistic Arts and Crafts Wrought Iron Standard Floor Lamp, signed L. Van Boeckel

Artistic Arts and Crafts Wrought Iron Standard Floor Lamp, signed L. Van Boeckel

By Louis Van Boeckel

Located in Lisse, NL

Rare Louis Van Boeckel wrought iron floor lamp or Oil Lamp. This magnificently handcrafted Art Nouveau lamp was originally made as an oil lamp. At some point in time oil lamps went out of fashion and that is when this oil lamp was transformed into an electrical lamp. On top you can still see the rimb on which the oil reservoir would have rested. Obviously what makes this work of art so beautiful is the design and the incredible details and the natural shape of the leaves, the flowers etc. This is the work of a true artist and you will enjoy it every time you see and use it. Comes with embossed stamp ‘LVANBOECKEL’. Mind you, our fair price even includes perfect packing and also worldwide delivery from our store to your door within 4 days. Height: 66 inches . Louis Van Boeckel (1857-1944) of Lier, Belgium, was one of the most important ornamental blacksmiths of his time. He was an apprentice to the Verwilt factory in Lier, but developed most of his skills as an artisan by himself. His work, including some of his important animal depictions, can be found in the Timmermanns-Opsomer-Haus Museum in Lier. Van Boeckel’s numerous awards included the gold medal at the Exposition du Cercle Rubens (1890), le Prix de l’Art appliqué à la rue, Brussels (1893) and the Grande Médaille d’Or and title of Chevalier de l’ordre Royal du Cambodge at the Exposition Universelle in Paris (1900). He is also responsible for work on the grid of the city hall of Lier after 1890, the grave decorations for Czar Alexander III in St. Petersburg and Queen Marie-Henriette in Laeken, the staircases of honor of the Khedive Palace in Cairo and Benedictine monastery on Mount Olive...

Original Antique Map of Greece and Epirus after the Persian Wars, Published 1880

Original Antique Map of Greece and Epirus after the Persian Wars, Published 1880

Located in Langweer, NL

The map titled "GRAECIA, EPIRUS post bella Persica," translates to "Greece and Epirus after the Persian Wars." It covers the regions of ancient Greece and Epirus following the Greco-Persian Wars, a series of conflicts between the Greek city-states and the Persian Empire during the 5th century BC. What makes this map interesting: 1. **Historical Context**: The period after the Persian Wars was pivotal for ancient Greece, leading to the rise of Athens as a major power and the Golden Age of Athens. 2. **Inset Maps**: Detailed insets, such as the one showing the Acropolis of Athens, provide close-up views of historically significant locations. 3. **Topography**: It features the diverse terrain of Greece, from the rugged mountain ranges to the intricate coastlines and islands, influencing the development of Greek city-states. 4. **City-States**: The map likely details the various polis or city-states, such as Athens, Sparta, Thebes, and others, which played critical roles in the Persian Wars. 5. **Battle Sites**: It might mark important battle sites from the wars, like Marathon, Thermopylae, Salamis, and Plataea. 6. **Latin Labels**: The use of Latin for place names and descriptions adds to the map's scholarly quality. 7. **Cultural Landmarks**: The map may include locations of significant cultural and historical landmarks from the era, such as temples, theatres, and agoras. This map is from the "Spruner-Menke Atlas Antiquus," compiled by Karl Spruner von Merz and edited by Theodorus Menke. The atlas, known for its detailed maps of historical and ancient geographies, was a significant educational tool in the 19th century. The Greco-Persian Wars, which included famous battles such as Marathon and Salamis, were crucial for the preservation of Greek independence...

Turkey in Europe & Balkans Map, Antique Hand-Colored Map, 1860 This finely detailed antique map illustrates Turkey in Europe together with the broader Balkan Peninsula, presenting a comprehensive view of Southeastern Europe during the mid-19th century. Published in 1860 by W. G. Blackie & Son for The Imperial Atlas of Modern Geography, the map captures the political geography of the Ottoman Empire’s European territories at a time of increasing nationalist movements and geopolitical tension. The composition covers present-day Greece, Bulgaria, Serbia, Bosnia, Montenegro, Albania, Romania, and parts of Hungary, with an inset map of Moldavia. Political borders are delicately hand-colored, clearly distinguishing Ottoman lands from neighboring states and frontier regions. Major cities such as Constantinople (Istanbul), Adrianople (Edirne), Sofia, Belgrade, Bucharest, Salonica (Thessaloniki), Athens, and Sarajevo are carefully labeled, alongside an extensive network of towns and transport routes. Rivers form a dominant structural element, including the Danube, Sava, Drina, Morava, and Maritsa, while engraved relief shading depicts the Dinaric Alps, Balkan Mountains, and interior highlands. Coastal details along the Adriatic, Aegean, and Black Seas are precisely rendered, with islands and ports clearly identified, emphasizing maritime connections and strategic locations. This map is both a valuable historical document and a visually compelling decorative piece, offering insight into the complex territorial structure of the Balkans before the major redrawing of borders later in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Ideal for collectors of Balkan history, Ottoman studies, or refined interior spaces seeking an authoritative antique map. Condition report: Good antique condition. Light overall age toning with minor scattered foxing, primarily in the margins. Original fold lines as issued. Plate mark visible. Framing tips: A dark walnut or black frame with a wide ivory or parchment-toned mat will enhance the hand coloring and fine engraved detail, making it well suited for library, study, or living spaces. Technique: Copper engraving with original hand coloring Maker: W. G. Blackie & Son, Glasgow, Edinburgh & London, 1860 Keywords: Turkey in Europe map, Balkans map, Ottoman Empire map, antique Balkans map, 1860 map, Southeastern Europe, European Turkey, Ottoman Europe, historical Turkey, Balkan Peninsula, Greece map, Bulgaria map, Serbia map, Bosnia map, Montenegro map, Albania map, Romania map, Moldavia map, Constantinople map...
