This exceptional, museum-worthy oversized American Sunburst Quilt, circa 1860-1880, measures an impressive 90 by 108 inches and features more than 40 sunburst medallions fashioned from a collection of period chintzes, printed cottons, shirtings, stripes, geometrics and conversation prints, all against a brilliant yellow ground. The quilt stands as a superb example of nineteenth century American folk art.
It has a four-sided sawtooth border of rich red printed cotton that frames the quilt and the hand quilting is fine, closely spaced and dense. The color palette includes turkey reds, indigo blues, double pinks, chocolate browns and madder browns, cream and natural white shirtings and a few muted blacks or near blacks, along with the vibrant chrome-yellow ground.
