Conoció de cerca las vanguardias inclinándose por una figuración colorista, derivada del impresionismo y el fauvismo. Allí entrará rápidamente en contacto con el núcleo de artistas españoles. Realiza una pintura próxima al postimpresionismo francés, con un marcado acento lírico. En París alcanzó un gran éxito realizando multitud de exposiciones. En 1936 recibe el Premio Carnegie. Grau Sala destaca, además, como creador de escenarios teatrales y como excelente ilustrador. Fallece en Barcelona en 1975. Celebró diversas muestras individuales, sobre todo en Barcelona y París, pero también en ciudades como Nueva York, Toulouse, Londres o los Ángeles. Kipp Soldwedel (American 1913-1999) "Operation Sail" oil on canvas Very rare painting depicting the arrival of all tall ships taking part of the New York Harbor Event in 1964 and Celebrating the Birth of America. Framed with brass nameplates for all the vessels / ships. President John F. Kennedy coined the name for the event. The name 'Operation Sail', was to be used again in 1976, 1989, 1992 & 2000. The painting is a water-level view of the International fleet, USS Forrestal aircraft carrier in background, and Statue of Liberty to the right. This was painted in 1976. Signed lower right. Verso signed, inscribed with artist's copyrights and dedicated lower right. With frame: 58" high x 80" wide Marine artist Kipp Soldwedel studied fine arts at Yale University and was awarded four Beaux Arts medals. He received a scholarship to the American Academy in Rome. During World War II, he was a flight instructor and meteorologist for the United States Air Force. Kipp Soldwedel is most well known for his maritime battle scenes though he did paint over 150 portraits of celebrities. His illustrations appeared in magazines such as National Geographic, Time, Life, and Town and Country. Many of his paintings depicted the tall ships. He was the known as one of the greatest modren masters of Marine Paintings. 1964 The first Operation Sail event, a tie-in with the New York World's Fair, brought tall ships from around the world to New York Harbor for a grand parade of sail up the Hudson, led by the USCGC Eagle as the host ship. Many of the vessels raced from Plymouth, England, to Lisbon, Portugal, before setting off on a 3,000-mile transatlantic journey to Bermuda and then a 630-mile northwest run to New York. The event also featured lifeboat races, a ticker-tape parade up Broadway honoring seamen of every participating nation, and two grand balls. Sagres, 1937 by Louis Letouche (French 1924-2015) oil painting on linen canvas, stretched over board framed Framed size: 16 x 19 inches Superb oil painting by the well listed French marine artist Louis Letouche (1924-2015). The painting portrays the early 20th Century ship titled: Sagres, 1937. The three-masted ship was launched under the name Albert Leo Schlageter on 30 October 1937 at Blohm & Voss in Hamburg for Nazi Germany's Kriegsmarine. The ship was named after Albert Leo Schlageter, who was executed in 1923 by French forces occupying the Ruhr area. Her first commander was Bernhard Rogge. Sagres is a sister ship of the Gorch Fock, the Horst Wessel, and the Romanian training vessel Mircea. Another sister, Herbert Norkus, was not completed, while Gorch Fock II was built in 1958 by the Germans to replace the ships lost after the war. Following a number of international training voyages, the ship was used as a stationary office ship after the outbreak of World War II and was only put into ocean-going service again in 1944 in the Baltic Sea. On 14 November 1944 she hit a Soviet mine off Sassnitz and had to be towed to port in Swinemünde. Eventually transferred to Flensburg, she was taken over there by the Allies when the war ended and finally confiscated by the United States. In 1948, the U.S. sold her to Brazil for a symbolic price of $5,000 USD. She was towed to Rio de Janeiro where she sailed as a school ship for the Brazilian Navy under the name Guanabara. The subject of the painting, derived from Ovid’s Metamorphoses (Book IV, lines 663–752), is inspired by the myth of Princess Andromeda, daughter of King Cepheus of Ethiopia and Queen Cassiopeia, depicted here as she is freed by the Greek hero Perseus after he has defeated the sea monster that held her captive. This cruel punishment had been imposed on her by Poseidon, god of the seas, to atone for the arrogance of her mother Cassiopeia, who had dared to compare herself and her daughter to the Nereids in beauty. When Perseus returned home on his winged horse Pegasus after his victory over the fearsome Medusa, he saw the princess chained to a rock on the coast and, overwhelmed by her beauty, decided to save her. The hero, clad in gleaming armour and wearing the red cloak of the victor and a crested helmet, is flanked by two small cherubs, one of whom helps him to break the chains binding Andromeda to the rock, emphasising the theme of love triumphing over danger. This is a smaller version derived from the famous ‘Perseus Frees Andromeda’ painted by Peter Paul Rubens around 1620, now housed in the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin, from which the main scene on the right has been taken. Rubens, who often employed sophisticated references to antiquity to emphasise the message of his paintings, modelled the figure of Andromeda and the cherub at her side, intent on loosening her chains, on the statue of the Happy Venus (Rome, Vatican Collections, which he saw during his stay in Rome. The success of Rubens’s work led to its widespread circulation and a substantial number of copies produced by his workshop (in Vienna at the Liechtenstein Gallery, in Potsdam at the Sanssouci Gallery, the Museum of Arles, and the Museum of Lisbon). It is our opinion that the authorship of the finely executed painting presented here is to be attributed to a Flemish artist active around the second half of the 17th century amongst Rubens’s followers...

Bearing a Barcinski Art Gallery label verso and a second label stating that the painting was sold in 1961 at a benefit auction for the Albert Einstein Hospital held at the Museum of San Paulo. Ivan Freitas was a Brazilian Postwar & Contemporary painter and Muralist (1932-2006) Son of muralist Severino Araújo, Ivan started painting as a self-taught artist. His first individual exhibition was at the Public Library, in 1957. With the success of the exhibition, he was able to move to Rio de Janeiro the following year, in 1958, where he came into contact with the work of artists such as Salvador Dali and Rene Magritte who influenced him. Between 1962 and 1963 he resided as a fellow in Paris. Between 1969 and 1972, he was on his second tour abroad, in New York City and commissioned by the International Telephone and Telegraph Corporation. Back in Brazil, he painted a mural of over a thousand square meters on the external wall of the National School of Music in Rio de Janeiro in 1984 - the first of the Arte nos Muros Project. Still in the 70s, he married Dalva Mendes Gall whom he left after his death in 200, an extensive collection where one can find all the best works of this renowned Paraiba artist in Brazil and abroad. The stay in New York, from 1969 to 1972, was perhaps the greatest turning point in Ivan's career. Until then, according to art critic Roberto Pontual, the plastic artist followed "a phase of abstraction close to the informal". In the United States , with so much technological influence around him, Ivan becomes interested in the machine and its movement mechanisms and inserts these perceptions in his works, as kinetic constructions with small motors hidden in boxes as Pontual defines, and also and triggering light patterns in cyclic and repeated series. (similar to the Op Art works of Julio le Parc and works by Yves Tinguely being shown at Rene Denis Gallery in Paris In 1968, the magazine Galeria de Arte Moderna (GAM), published an article entitled Ivan Freitas and the Cosmic Space. In the Brazilian Dictionary of Plastic Artists , the Italian art critic Giuseppe Marchiori refers to Ivan Frentas as someone who "controls and dominates each part of the painting with a desire to deepen the image that surprises and enchants". Still according to the critic, Ivan is someone who preserves the mystery in the harmony between lines and the colorful atmosphere, where he creates pauses and rhythms for the reading of his "secret structures". Arte Neo Concreta artists Lygia Clark, Helio Oiticica and Lygia Pape, were all contemporaries The poet Ferreira Gullar writes: "Freitas does not turn to the subjective world, does not inquire into the arcana of the unconscious; he inquires into the future and, in the solitude of his paintings, promises us a serene and orderly world. And, if in his landscapes man does not appear, it is not that this order excludes him - it is that he has not yet reached it.
