1 Answer
What do you call art that looks real?
What you call art that looks real depends on its age and style. Realistic works of art that date back to the 19th century are usually called Realist art. Some key artists associated with Realism include Honoré Daumier, Gustave Courbet and Jean-François Millet. During the 20th century, other realistic art movements emerged. Social Realists like Grant Wood and Ben Shahn commented on modern living conditions by depicting everyday subjects in a realistic manner. Photorealists, such as Richard Estes, Ralph Goings, Chuck Close and Audrey Flack, focused on producing artwork that looked as lifelike as a photograph while stripping away emotion. Hyperrealists like Carole Feuerman, Duane Hanson and John De Andrea produced work that closely resembles reality while conveying social messages or critiquing contemporary issues.
