David Bruce Cratsley (1944 - 1998) was an American photographer specialized in still lifes, portraits of friends, and life in New York City. He had a reputation of master of light and shadow.
Bruce Cratsley attended Swarthmore College, graduating in 1966, and then, in the early 1970s, The New School for Social Research, studying under Lisette Model.
Cratsley worked for many years as a gallerist at Marlborough Gallery before quitting in 1986 to become a full-time photographer. 'The Door,' photographed, New York c.1979/1980, represents one of only two known photographs featuring the early graffiti work of a young Jean-Michel Basquiat & Keith Haring together on one image (see upper right & left).
Basquiat's tags appear in at least 3 places ('Salt', teepe & skull). The work combines the two most iconic Haring & Basquiat images of all: Haring's radiant baby & Basquiat’s crown; while also presenting the work of Whitney Biennial artist, David Wojnarowicz (Burning House mid upper left) & five time Brazilian Biennial artist Alex Vallauri (acrobat stencils across lower area). A true testament to the New York downtown art scene of the late 70's/early 80's.

As an Art Director, Fernando has played a key role in creating memorable visuals for historic NY venues such as CBGB's, The Mudd Club, Area and Danceteria.
Fernando’s work was recently featured in the Jeffrey Deitch curated show “Area” at The Hole Gallery NYC, with his film stills from "Unmade Beds" & "The Foreigner"- two of the most significant underground films of the 1970’s New York Punk scene, recently exhibited at The Museum of The Moving Image.

Chauncey Foster Ryder (29 February 1868 – 18 May 1949)[1] was an early 20th century American Postimpressionist Tonalist landscape painter known for a green-gray palette termed 'Ryder green'.
Education and personal life
Ryder was born in 1868 in Danbury, Connecticut, but grew up mainly in New Haven.[2][3] He began studying painting as a boy. In his early twenties, he moved to Chicago to attend the Art Institute,[4] then Smith's Academy.[5] After only a year at the latter, he was hired as an instructor.[5]
In 1891, he married Mary Dole Keith.[5] In 1901, they moved to Paris, France, where Ryder continued his art education, studying with Jean-Paul Laurens at the Académie Julian. Ryder stayed in France for several years, living in an art colony at Étaples and exhibiting his work at the Paris Salon (1903–1909).[3] He took on occasional students, including American painter William Posey Silva...

Norman Rockwell was an American painter and illustrator known for his iconic depictions of American culture created for The Saturday Evening Post. With a range of favorite subjects that included nuclear families, mischievous children, and small-town life, his work has achieved an iconic status: the 1943 painting of a Thanksgiving dinner, Freedom from Want, has been reproduced and parodied countless times in contemporary culture. Biography: Jean-François Portaels, also known as Jan Portaels, was a versatile Belgian painter born on April 3, 1818, in Vilvoorde and passed away on February 8, 1895, in Schaerbeek. He was celebrated for his genre scenes, biblical stories, landscapes, portraits, and Orientalist subjects. As a teacher and director of the Academy of Fine Arts of Ghent and the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels, Portaels significantly impacted Belgian art, becoming a pivotal figure in the Belgian Orientalist school. His works were known for their ‘everyday elegance and feminine grace,’ and he played a crucial role in influencing the next generation of Belgian artists, including notable figures like Théo van Rysselberghe.
Portaels was the son of a wealthy brewer who also served as Vilvoorde’s mayor. Showing an early passion for drawing, he was sent to the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels in 1836, where he studied under François-Joseph Navez, a former student of Jacques-Louis David. Navez invited him to his studio, which was renowned at the time, allowing Portaels to refine his skills alongside other talented students like Charles de Groux and Joseph Stallaert.
In 1841, Portaels moved to Paris, enrolling at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and studying under Paul Delaroche. He became influenced by the emerging Orientalist movement, which was gaining traction in Paris. In 1842, he won the Grand Prix de Rome, which funded his travels across Italy and other regions, including Morocco, Algeria, Egypt, Lebanon, Judea, Spain, Hungary, and Norway. These journeys profoundly influenced his artistic vision, particularly his Orientalist works.
Upon his return to Belgium in 1847, Portaels was appointed Director of the academy in Ghent. In 1849, he married Marie Hélène Navez, the daughter of his first teacher. Despite being offered the directorship of the Brussels Academy, he initially declined, opting to preserve his independence. He later accepted a teaching position at the Academy and eventually became its director in 1878, succeeding Eugène Simonis.
Portaels was known for his broad range of artistic talents, including history painting, portraiture, and genre art. He was particularly recognized for his Orientalist depictions, often portraying the ‘Oriental woman’ with distinctive features like arched eyebrows and almond-shaped eyes. His style, marked by charm and elegance, distinguished him from the dominant artistic movements of Classicism and Romanticism.
