Marc Chagall, Romeo and Juliet, The Ceiling of the Paris Opera, 1965 (after)

By Marc Chagall

Located in Southampton, NY

This exquisite lithograph after Marc Chagall (1887–1985), titled Romeo et Juliette (Romeo and Juliet), from the album Le plafond de l’Opera de Paris par Marc Chagall (The Ceiling of the Paris Opera by Marc Chagall), originates from the 1965 edition published by Andre Sauret, Editeur, Monte Carlo, rendered by Charles Sorlier, Paris, and printed by Mourlot Freres, Paris, October 6, 1965. This romantic and luminous composition pays homage to Charles Gounod’s opera Romeo et Juliette, one of the works celebrated in Chagall’s magnificent ceiling design for the Palais Garnier. Romeo et Juliette radiates with the tenderness, tragedy, and transcendent beauty of Shakespeare’s tale, reimagined through Chagall’s poetic symbolism and vivid color. Floating lovers, celestial forms, and musical motifs intertwine in a lyrical vision of eternal love and harmony, reflecting the artist’s lifelong fascination with the union of art, music, and emotion. The composition captures the very spirit of Gounod’s music—lyrical, passionate, and filled with grace. Executed as a lithograph on velin paper, this work measures 13 x 9.5 inches (33.02 x 24.13 cm). Unsigned and unnumbered as issued. The edition exemplifies the technical mastery of the Mourlot Freres atelier and the enduring collaboration between Marc Chagall and Charles Sorlier. Artwork Details: Artist: After Marc Chagall (1887–1985) Title: Romeo et Juliette (Romeo and Juliet), from Le plafond de l’Opera de Paris par Marc Chagall (The Ceiling of the Paris Opera by Marc Chagall) Medium: Lithograph on velin paper Dimensions: 13 x 9.5 inches (33.02 x 24.13 cm) Inscription: Unsigned and unnumbered as issued Date: 1965 Publisher: Andre Sauret, Editeur, Monte Carlo Rendered by: Charles Sorlier, Paris Printer: Mourlot Freres, Paris Catalogue raisonne references: Cain, Julien, and Fernand Mourlot. Cramer ed., 1995, illustration 61. Condition: Well preserved, consistent with age and medium Provenance: From the album Le plafond de l’Opera de Paris par Marc Chagall (The Ceiling of the Paris Opera by Marc Chagall), published by Andre Sauret, Editeur, Monte Carlo, October 6, 1965, in an edition of V̅ Notes: Excerpted from the album, This work could not have been made without the valuable collaboration of Madame Marc Chagall to whom we extend our warmest thanks. This work, made by Andre Sauret, was completed to print on October 6, 1965 on the presses of l’imprimerie du Lion in Paris. Jacques Lassaigne’s texts were composed by hand in Romain du Roi in the workshops of l’imprimerie nationale. The VI color lithographies and all the black and white drawings were set on stone by Charles Sorlier, based on Marc Chagall’s original models. The original lithography and color lithographs were drawn on the presses of Mourlot Freres. The binding is by Maurice Busenhart in Lausanne. About the Publication: Le plafond de l’Opera de Paris par Marc Chagall (The Ceiling of the Paris Opera by Marc Chagall), published in October 1965 by Andre Sauret, Editeur, Monte Carlo, commemorates one of the most ambitious and celebrated artistic commissions of the 20th century. Created under the direction of Charles Sorlier, the album documents Chagall’s magnificent ceiling design for the Palais Garnier in Paris, unveiled in 1964. The publication includes color lithographs based on the artist’s preparatory studies and painted maquettes, executed with exceptional fidelity by Mourlot Freres. Chagall’s ceiling—divided into segments representing musical masters such as Mozart, Wagner, Berlioz, Ravel, and Debussy—blends myth, music, and emotion into a vibrant celestial composition. The album captures this visionary synthesis through luminous lithography, allowing viewers to experience the grandeur and intimacy of the artist’s monumental work. Produced with the collaboration of Madame Marc Chagall, Charles Sorlier, and Fernand Mourlot, and printed with the precision and artistry for which Andre Sauret’s editions were renowned, this publication stands as both a tribute to Chagall’s genius and a celebration of French art’s enduring dialogue between tradition, innovation, and the divine. About the Artist: Marc Chagall (1887–1985) was a Belarus-born French painter, printmaker, and designer whose visionary imagination, radiant color, and deeply poetic symbolism made him one of the most beloved and influential artists of the 20th century. Rooted in the imagery of his Jewish heritage and the memories of his childhood in Vitebsk, Chagall’s art wove together themes of faith, love, folklore, and fantasy with a dreamlike modern sensibility. His unique style—merging elements of Cubism, Fauvism, Expressionism, and Surrealism—defied categorization, transforming ordinary scenes into lyrical meditations on memory and emotion. Influenced by Russian icon painting, medieval religious art, and the modern innovations of artists such as Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, and Georges Braque, Chagall developed a profoundly personal visual language filled with floating figures, vibrant animals, musicians, and lovers that symbolized the transcendent power of imagination and love. During his early years in Paris, he became an integral part of the Ecole de Paris circle, forming friendships with Amedeo Modigliani, Fernand Leger, and Sonia Delaunay, and his creative spirit resonated with that of his peers and successors—Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray—artists who, like Chagall, sought to push the boundaries of perception, emotion, and form. Over a prolific career that spanned painting, printmaking, stained glass, ceramics, and stage design, Chagall brought an unparalleled poetic sensibility to modern art, infusing even the most abstract subjects with human warmth and spiritual depth. His works are held in the most prestigious museums around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Centre Pompidou, the Tate, and the Guggenheim, where they continue to inspire generations of artists and collectors. The highest price ever paid for a Marc Chagall artwork is approximately $28.5 million USD, achieved in 2017 at Sotheby’s New York for Les Amoureux (1928). Marc Chagall Romeo...

1983 Abstract Geometric Oil and Gouache Painting Study for Alma Robert Kelly

By Robert Kelly

Located in Surfside, FL

Robert Kelly (American, 1956-) Abstract Mixed Media on paper Study for Alma 1983 Pencil titled Hand signed lower right Dimensions: Frame: 26 X 19 Image: 24 X 17.5 Robert Kelly (born 1956) is an American artist. He is based in New York City. Kelly was born in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and studied at Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts (B.A. 1978). His paintings have been acquired by public and private collections in Europe and the United States, including The Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY; The Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn, NY; The Museum of Fine Arts, Santa Fe, NM; Milwaukee Art Museum, Milwaukee, WI; Smith College Art Museum, Northampton MA; Jane Voorhees Zimmerli Art Museum, Rutger’s University, NJ; Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts, Montgomery; The Fogg Museum, Cambridge, MA; The Margulies Collection, Miami, FL; and the McNay Art Museum, San Antonio, TX. Kelly has traveled throughout the United States, Europe, North Africa, the Near East, and Nepal. His work often incorporates unusual materials from his journeys, among them vintage posters and printed antique paper, obscured and layered in saturated pigments on a canvas faintly scored with irregular grids. Kelly’s paintings have been likened to palimpsests and his method described as one of building “meticulously on inhabited ground, layering materials, documents, and signs, covering them, wiping out their beauty, nearly, but allowing something of the labor and their languages to persist.” Kelly worked as a commercial photographer for Polaroid in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and completed residencies at The MacDowell Colony and The Karolyi Foundation, Vence, France, before devoting himself entirely to painting in 1982. His work has been the subject of more than forty-five solo shows at venues in North America and Europe, including Spazio Bianco/AR Contemporary Art, Milan, Italy; Leslie Feely Fine Art, New York; and The John Berggruen Gallery, San Francisco, California. He has participated in more than one hundred group shows in the United States and abroad. including the Projects Inaugural Exhibition at Bentley Gallery Featuring works by Jim Dine, Jennifer Bartlett, Donald Sultan, Frank Stella, John Chamberlain, Julian Schnabel and, Dominique Blain. Kelly’s influences include the De Stijl movement, Malevich and Mondrian and modernists like Bauhaus, Joaquin Torres-Garcia, Philip Guston, Richard Diebenkorn, Kurt Schwitters, Blinky Palermo and Brazilian Neo-Concretists Lygia Clark and Helio Oiticica. Kelly himself cites Hans Arp, Myron Stout, Tony Smith, Brancusi, Calder, Bill Traylor, Louise Bourgeois, and Ellsworth Kelly. Primary Abstraction, Process-Oriented, Hard-Edged, New York School Artists, Line, Form, and Color, Curvilinear Forms. “Kelly compares his work method to the practice of a stonemason building a wall, setting the components in place as they rise with an astuteness and precision found in the process of composing formal puzzles. Addressing the full expanse of a canvas covered entirely with paper, he masterfully builds up his surface with the pared down tools of line, form and color. Given their remarkable elegance, sheen and tactile qualities, the paintings invite drop-dead awe.” Edward Leffingwell, Robert Kelly: Paper Trails “In these works the sophisticated play between translucency and opacity, representation and abstraction conflates past and present—be it the history of art or of a psyche.” Hilarie M. Sheets, Art in America “[His] process yields the self-sustaining and harmonious ‘rightness’ of so much of Kelly’s work, a sense that each form could never be other than it is; were it sharper, more obtuse, or thicker, each angle, curve, or horizontal band would collapse into formlessness. Kelly’s compositions are held in such perfect moments of balance...” João Ribas, Robert Kelly: Praxis and Poesis “The works are paradoxical: by disassembling and then reassembling the pieces, Kelly seems to undermine visual ‘completeness’ by a fragmented presentation. Yet it nonetheless feels as though the image is a cohesive whole.” Melissa Kuntz, Art in America “Confronted as all artists are now with the exhaustion of subjectivity, Robert Kelly insists on the capacity of painting to mediate subjective apprehension through symbolic forms and sensual experience. Nothing less.” Lyle Rexer, Robert Kelly: Painting’s Place “Robert Kelly’s art is exemplary. It reveals an intelligence that is as alert and modern as one could wish but is at the same time saturated in the knowledge of other times and places.” John Ash...

Andrew Wyeth, Burning Off, from The Four Seasons (after)

By Andrew Wyeth

Located in Southampton, NY

This exquisite lithograph after Andrew Wyeth (1917–2009), titled Burning Off, originates from the distinguished 1962 folio The Four Seasons: Paintings and Drawings by Andrew Wyeth. Published and printed by Art in America Company, Inc., New York, the edition captures Wyeth’s poetic meditation on atmosphere and transformation. Burning Off depicts a summer morning’s sea fog gradually lifting from the landscape, revealing the tranquil geometry of field and horizon. Through restrained tonal contrasts and delicate textural nuance, Wyeth conveys both the mystery and stillness of the natural world in transition. Executed on velin paper, this lithograph measures 17 x 13 inches (43.2 x 33 cm). As issued, it is unsigned and unnumbered, representing the folio’s authentic format. The Four Seasons series was conceived by the editors of Art in America in collaboration with Andrew and Betsy Wyeth, who selected drawings from the artist’s studio and personal collection to embody the cyclical poetry of the seasons. Each image reflects Wyeth’s profound sensitivity to light, time, and emotion—his ability to evoke the spiritual essence of landscape through quiet realism. Artwork Details: Artist: After Andrew Wyeth (1917–2009) Title: Burning Off, from The Four Seasons, Paintings and Drawings by Andrew Wyeth, 1962 Medium: Lithograph on velin paper Dimensions: 17 x 13 inches (43.2 x 33 cm) Inscription: Unsigned and unnumbered, as issued Date: 1962 Publisher: Art in America Company, Inc., New York Printer: Art in America Company, Inc., New York Condition: Well preserved, consistent with age and medium Provenance: From the 1962 folio The Four Seasons, Paintings and Drawings by Andrew Wyeth, published and printed by Art in America Company, Inc., New York Notes: Excerpted from the 1962 folio: "In 1962 the editors of Art in America proposed to Wyeth a portfolio of images of his recent dry-brush drawings. The artist and his wife suggested the theme, 'The Four Seasons,' because of the essential role played in his work by the cycle of the seasons. The drawings were selected by Andrew and Betsy Wyeth from works in the house and studio at Chadds Ford, supplemented by some owned by friends. With a few exceptions they had never been exhibited or reproduced. The plates were made directly from the originals. In these drawings Wyeth's loving concentration on the object is fully revealed. But as always in his work, this concern with the tangible is balanced by sensibility to mood, to the emotion arising from the actual. They are pervaded with a sense of the season—the exact time of year, the hour of the day, the quality of the light. To the truth and subtlety with which he captures these intangible factors, these drawings owe their poignant poetry." About the Artist: Andrew Wyeth (1917–2009) was an American visual artist and one of the best-known painters of the mid-20th century. Although he considered himself an abstractionist, Wyeth’s work is characterized by a meticulous realism imbued with psychological depth and atmosphere. He often painted the landscapes and people surrounding his homes in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, and Cushing, Maine, creating an intimate record of American rural life. The son of the celebrated illustrator N. C. Wyeth, Andrew trained under his father before developing his own deeply personal visual language inspired by Winslow Homer, Henry David Thoreau, and King Vidor. His wife, Betsy Wyeth, was both his muse and career manager, while his son Jamie Wyeth continued the family’s artistic legacy. Among Wyeth’s best-known works is Christina’s World (1948), housed in the Museum of Modern Art, New York—a quintessential image of 20th-century American art. His other notable series include The Helga Pictures and his window studies, each reflecting a profound meditation on solitude, memory, and perception. Wyeth was the first painter to receive both the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Congressional Gold Medal, and was elected to the French Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1980. In 2022, Andrew Wyeth's painting Day Dream sold for USD 23.29 million at Christie’s New York, setting a world record for the artist. Andrew Wyeth lithograph...

By Cynthia Coulombe Bégin

Located in Los Angeles, CA

Coulombe-Bégin's dynamic acrylic on canvas works seek to produce a metamorphic interpretation of the artist's inner identity. Her paintings make ample use of contrasting colors to create exuberance and energy in her images. Inspired by street art, Coulombe Bégin 's paintings range from the abstract to the surreal and employ a variety of techniques and materials. Her contemporary artworks draw inspiration from body image, the universally recognizable symbol of hearts, and the experience of humankind. She brings a sensitivity to her work that stems from her exploration of identity and the joy and happiness of existence. Coulombe-Bégin draws us into her internal world: exploring the soul and matter, conscience, and the modern universe. This original painting depicting one heart painted...
