Artist Commentary: This artwork is intended as a gently rotating, dimensional mandala. It has a baroque-upcycled aesthetic that playfully transcends the utility of the can-tab. The shape recalls a chandelier or and upside-down layer cake. Sparkling moiré patterns emerge in the hanging chains as viewers circumnavigate the art. Artist Commentary: Aluminum can-tabs chained together with safety pins are layered, massed and attached to an MDF backing creating a dense sparkling texture. The can-tabs are reflective, glinting in the light, catching the eye of those who pass by them. These shield-like, glittering wall pieces have the presence of valuable treasure, but closer inspection reveals that the treasure is made from can-tabs, one of many common disposable items that continuously pass through our hands. Kathleen Vance, “Traveling Landscape, "Golden Interior” found case, artificial foliage, resin, paint (12.5”x5”x8”) 2022 Kathleen Vance is an environmental artist who creates sculptures and installations that connect people to local aspects of nature that are overlooked or under-appreciated. Vance received her B.F.A. from Pratt Institute and her M.F.A. from Hunter College in sculpture. She has received numerous grants and awards for her artwork including: a travel grant to research the geo-thermal regions of Iceland, a grant from the Puffin foundation for public sculpture, a development grant from Aljira, Center for Contemporary Art in conjunction with the Creative Capital Foundation, and a grant from the Brooklyn Arts council which aided the development and implementation of an outdoor community based art project in East New York. Ms. Vance was artist in resident in Berlin, Germany, presenting a workshop on environmental arts in connection with the Grunewald Parks Department in Germany. Her sculptural installations have been featured at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Krakow, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Jacksonville, the Orlando Museum of Art, the Weatherspoon Art Museum, the Peeler Art Center, the Weisman Art Museum, the Brandywine River Museum of Art, the Bruce Museum, the Ellen Noel Art Museum, Nassauischer Kunstverein Wiesbaden, the Hillwood Art Museum, VOLTA New York, PULSE New York and Miami, and EXPO Chicago, as well as many private and public institutions.
