Fish Study by Hawaii artist Carol Bennett is a reverse painting on glass artwork. It is Oil, Varnish, Gold Leaf and powdered Cobalt. It is 9x12. Carol Bennett's artwork is a meditative journey through both the water and through life. She is one of the few artists to truly capture what it's like to be in and moving and swimming through the water. For Carol, the act of swimming underwater is similar to the process of painting. Born and raised in Miami Beach, Oka Doner is the granddaughter of painter Samuel Heller. Oka Doner's father, Kenneth Oka, was elected judge and mayor of Miami Beach during her youth (1945–1964). Halte de chasseurs (The Hunters’ Rest) is a 19th-century French animal and sporting oil painting attributed to Alfred de Dreux (1810–1860). Two huntsmen in red coats pause with their horses and hounds beside a green signpost in a wooded landscape. One rider remains mounted while his companion stands beside a dark saddled horse. The dogs gather at the lower left, drawing the eye into the scene. Red coats, warm earth tones and dark foliage contrast with a luminous opening in the clouded sky. The vertical composition combines the intimacy of a hunting group with the atmosphere of a woodland landscape. Alfred de Dreux was a French painter known for equestrian and animal subjects; works by him are held in the Louvre. The gallery offers this unsigned painting as attributed to the artist; it was previously catalogued by Artcurial as French School, after de Dreux. Oil on canvas. Canvas: approximately H 46 × W 38 cm (18.11 × 14.96 in). Overall with frame: H 62 × W 54 × D 7 cm (24.41 × 21.26 × 2.76 in). Cleaned and restored, and described by the gallery as being in very good condition. The painting is presented in the ornate gilt frame illustrated, with floral and scrolling ornament that complements the warm palette. Also called The Holy Virgin of Tenderness, represents the Mother of God and infant Christ in a tender cheek-to-cheek embrace. The Virgin's hands tenderly surround the head and hands of the Child Jesus while he takes the cloak of the Mother of God with his left hand and plays with the fingers of his right hand, between his mother's neck and his own. Two very old icons, from the 12th and 13th Centuries, painted on the same theme, are respectively in the Uspenskii Cathedral in Moscow and in the Russian Museum in St. Petersburg. This is how the artist sums up the technique used by him to create the icon: “The aim of these steps is to create a durable painting. The icon is eternal. The first step is to choose a support, traditionally made of wood, from the center of the trunk to avoid warping it. For this purpose, two hardwood bolts were often used on the back to give the picture panel additional stability. Often a frame is milled out. Then the image carrier is sanded smooth and now 12 or 14 thin layers of gesso are applied and sanded smooth as well. Then the preliminary drawing is applied and the drawing board is prepared with a special preparation called bolus. This bolus can be polished to a high gloss. Afterward, the gold leaf is "shot" with special brushes. It dries up within a few hours and can now be polished with agate. Gold leaf is real 24-carat gold.
