The watercolor is in a solid mahogany frame under UV glass in fine condition. Overall framed measurements are 14 by 11 inches. Provenance: A East Hampton, Long Island, New York collector.
Born in Queens, Long Island, NY, Impressionist
landscape and seascape painter Francis Dixon studied at the Art Students League in New York City under Impressionists Frank Vincent DuMond, Cape Cod, Massachusetts artist, Charles W. Hawthorne, and modernist Robert Henri. Having a good singing voice Dixon was an Army and Navy Song Leader for the War Department during World War I. From 1915 to 1917 was living and painting in Los Angeles, Carmel and Point Lobos, California. Dixon exhibited his California paintings at Folson Galleries New York City in 1917. Dixon continued to travel and paint, visiting Bermuda in 1923 and 1925, and Europe in the mid-1920s. In the 1930s he was living on West 55th Street in Manhattan with a number of other artists. He was a member of the Allied Artists of America (NY); Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts; and the Salmagundi Club, NY. He exhibited at The Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. (1916); Folson Gallery (NY, 1917, solo); Society of Independent Artists (NYC, 1917-18, 1920-22, 1924); Salmagundi Club (NYC, 1917-1940, 1943, 1945); National Academy of Design (NYC, 1925); Studio Guild Galleries (NYC, 1937); Barbizon-Plaza Galleries NYC, 1939); Allied Artists of America (NYC, 1940); and Salons of America (NYC). Painting measures 11"h x 14"w. The frame is 19 5/8"h and 22"w.
The watercolor is signed and dated lower left and also titled and dated in graphite as well.
Grace Martin Frame Taylor (1903-1995), a native of Morgantown, West Virginia, launched a nearly forty-year affiliation with the Mason College of Music and Fine Arts, now part of the University of Charleston in West Virginia.
In 1921, Taylor enrolled at the University of West Virginia in her hometown; disappointed by the art curriculum, however, she left after just one year to attend the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. She returned to the University of West Virginia in 1924 to finish her bachelor’s degree, selecting English as her major, with an emphasis on journalism; she eventually earned a master’s degree there in 1929.
Following her graduation, Taylor went to Provincetown, Massachusetts, and renewed her interest in art under the guidance of her distant cousin Blanche Lazzell. Both Provincetown and Lazzell had gained a significant reputation for a particular kind of color woodblock printmaking known as the white line method. Grace Taylor embraced this approach wholeheartedly; for twenty-eight summers she returned to Provincetown to advance her printmaking skills with Lazzell and Heinrich Pfeiffer. In the ensuing decades, she also studied under Hans Hofmann whom she called her “very favorite modern master.”
Taylor traveled to other destinations to further her education. In the late 1930s and early 1940s, she spent time at the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh; closer to home, she studied at the Old White Art Colony in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, and took lessons in portraiture in the capital city of Charleston...

Signed by the artist with initials, dated 1980, and numbered lower center in red crayon. Soft-ground etching with hand coloring on Stoneridge mould-made etching paper.
This print is one of a group of soft-ground etchings (Artist and Model, Artist and Model (in green and yellow), Those…Plants). The two versions of Artist and Model are printed from the same plates, but in different colors. In this iteration, marigold orange contrasts beautifully with rich black ink. Seen in all three prints is a bust in silhouette before a window. Artist and Model is a surprising name, as Hodgkin never painted or drew from a model.
Howard Hodgkin was introduced to the etching technique used in Artist and Model at Petersburg Press, where this print was produced and where he would become a long-time collaborator. This technique allowed him to work fluidly and spontaneously, creating the moody interior scenes that mark Hodgkin’s work from the late 70s and early 80s.

About the artist:
Born in Santa Rosa, California to a pioneering California family, Elizabeth Hoen was known for her watercolor paintings, many of them landscapes, in impressionist style. Her father, Berthold Hoen started a trading post in the Carillo adobe, the first building erected in the Sonoma Valley. He also helped survey and lay out the city of Santa Rosa.
Elizabeth Hoen is not only the first painter to have their work cataloged into the Sonoma County Museum’s collection, but she was also a prolific artist in California in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and maintained a studio during a period when California art was largely dominated by men.
