Have My Back: Contemporary Mixed Media Painting on Canvas

By Roseleen Labazacchy,

Located in Ibadan, Oyo

Art has always been a medium to express emotions, tell stories, and convey messages. The artwork titled "Have My Back" is a stunning portrayal of the bond between two women, showcasing the essence of trust, support, and camaraderie. In today's world, the tale of success is often portrayed as a one-person journey, highlighting the individual's hard work, perseverance, and determination. However, this artwork brings to light the indispensable role that trusted mentors and colleagues play in one's journey toward success. The artwork features two women, standing shoulder to shoulder. The women's posture exudes confidence, determination, and a sense of unity. The use of vibrant colors adds a sense of vibrancy to the artwork, creating a visually appealing image. The title of the artwork, "Have My Back," reinforces the idea of trust and support. It speaks volumes about the bond between the two women, highlighting the fact that they are each other's trusted confidants, supporters, and cheerleaders. The artwork's message is particularly relevant in today's world, where women often find themselves struggling to break the glass ceiling and establish themselves in their respective fields. The artwork reminds us that success is not a solo journey, but a collective effort, with the support of trusted mentors and colleagues. The use of two women in the artwork is particularly significant, as women have historically faced significant challenges in their professional and personal lives. The artwork challenges the traditional narrative of women as competitors and highlights the importance of collaboration and support among women. In conclusion, the artwork titled "Have My Back" is a powerful representation of the role that trusted mentors and colleagues play in one's journey toward success. The artwork's message is particularly relevant in today's world, where women often face significant challenges in their professional and personal lives. It reminds us that behind every great tale of success, there is an indispensable circle of trusted mentors and colleagues, and that success is a collective effort. Idia (Iyoba) was the mother of Esigie, the Oba of Benin who ruled from 1504 to 1550. She played a significant role in the rise and reign of her son, being described as a great warrior who fought relentlessly before and during her son's reign as the Oba (king) of the Edo people. Queen Idia was instrumental in securing the title of Oba for her son Esigie following the death of his father Oba Ozolua. To that end, she raised an army to fight off his brother Arhuaran who was supposed to be the Oba by right and tradition but was subsequently defeated in battle. Esigie’s mother became the 17th Oba of Benin. Esigie instituted the title of iyoba (queen mother) and conferred it on his mother, along with Eguae-Iyoba (Palace of the Queen Mother). —Wikipedia She's the epitome of courage, vision, strength, and vigor. In this Becoming series, I hope to revive our heritage as well as examine the intricacies of self-actualization, vis-a-vis drawing inspiration from the African history from the Benin and Esan perspective, contemporarily. Symbol of Memories 2: Contemporary Mixed Media Canvas Painting

Symbol of Memories 2: Contemporary Mixed Media Canvas Painting

By Oladimeji Alabi

Located in Ibadan, Oyo

Symbol of Memories 1 is an original painting by Oladimeji Alabi. Oladimeji created the Symbol of Memories with Mixed Media on a 30W by 50H inches primed canvas. The symbol of Memories is inspired by the story of my childhood. The objects and signs we grew up with as a child in our homes become symbols of our memories today. Art has the ability to evoke strong emotions and convey meaningful messages. One such artwork that does just that is "Symbol of Memories," a stunning piece that uses the mother as a symbol of life and hope. This artwork is made even more significant by the use of damask fabric, which was popular among Nigerian women in the late 70s to 90s and used for making gele, the head ties worn by women. The artwork speaks volumes about the importance of mothers in society. The mother is dressed in a vibrant damask fabric, which adds a sense of richness and texture to the painting. The use of damask fabric in the painting is significant as it represents a part of Nigerian culture and history. Damask was a popular fashion among Nigerian women in the late 70s to 90s and was used to make gele, the head ties worn by women on special occasions. The fabric is often associated with elegance, sophistication, and beauty, which adds a layer of meaning to the artwork. The mother in the painting is the focal point of the artwork, symbolizing the importance of mothers in society. Mothers are the backbone of families, providing love, support, and guidance to their children. They are often the ones who hold families together through difficult times, serving as a symbol of hope and resilience. The use of the damask fabric in the painting also represents the concept of memories. The fabric has a rich history in Nigerian culture, and for many people, it is a symbol of their childhood and the memories they hold dear. The painting serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving memories, both good and bad, and how they shape our lives. Overall, "Symbol of Memories" is a beautiful piece of art that celebrates the role of mothers in society. The use of damask fabric adds a layer of meaning to the painting, representing the importance of preserving memories and the rich culture of Nigeria. The mother as a focused subject symbolizes life and hope, the fabric applied in this art is called damask, which was a popular fashion among Nigerian women around the late 70s to 90s used for making gele(the head ties). Shipping Procedure Ships in a well-protected tube from Nigeria This work is unique, not a print or other type of copy. "Believe" is an original painting created by Eyitayo Alagbe. Eyitayo created "Beleive" with Mixed Media on a Primed canvas of 36W by 36H Inches Believe is a masterpiece that deserves to be celebrated. It is a powerful artwork that embodies the spirit of hope and faith that we so desperately need in these trying times. At its core, Believe is a symbol of optimism and perseverance. The artwork features a stunningly intricate image of a young boy, set against a backdrop of calming blue tones, the boy stands tall and proud, representing the resilience and strength that we all possess within us. The beauty of this artwork lies not only in its design but in its message. Believe is a reminder that we should never give up on our dreams, no matter how impossible they may seem. It encourages us to trust ourselves and to have faith in the path that we have chosen. It is not just an artist's interpretation of life, it is a positive force that inspires us to look at the world with a new perspective. Believe conveys that life has an amazing power to heal our system and rejuvenate our spirits. In today's world, where negativity and despair seem to be taking over, Believe is a beacon of hope. Its message is simple yet profound: we are capable of overcoming any obstacle if we believe in ourselves and never give up. The fact that Believe has managed to touch so many lives is a testament to its worth. It is not just a piece of art, but a timeless masterpiece that has the potential to inspire people for generations to come. In describing the painting "Believe", In Eyitayo Alagbe's words: "And above all, watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places. Those who don't believe in magic will never find it. Believe in your heart that you're meant to live a life full of passion, purpose, magic, and miracles". Your belief and working towards what you believe in can make so much difference between the life you are living and the life you desire. In conclusion, Believe is a true masterpiece that is both beautiful and meaningful. It's not for mere decoration, it's a source of inspiration for life. Its message is a reminder to us all that we have the strength within...

Mixed media on stretched canvas using image printing, decal paper, acrylics and gel/texture mediums. Gill Storr artist with Wychwood Art. Gill Storr is a London born and based contemporary artist. Following an accomplished career in the graphic design industry, Gill has blended her artistry with her knowledge of design, drawing on previous creative inspirations to add zest and variation to the art pieces she creates. After diligently refining her style over a number of years, she now focuses purely on art and is an emerging artist with work in private collections in the UK and US. Gill has had a standout couple of years, establishing herself as a one to watch within the contemporary art scene, with much more to come in the near future. Gill’s evolution into the art world came about from her desire to add an element of tactility to her work and experience blended into one. Gill coins the phrase ‘deconstructed lens’ to describe her work, creating one-off contemporary pieces that incorporate multiple layers with the traditional medium of paints, oils and gels combined with photographic elements on the canvas, board and paper. Gill’s work serves as a juxtaposition of traditional photography, taking an image that can be stored, re-purposed and viewed from a range of perspectives and creating an original piece that forces the viewer to see the scene purely from the artists’ point...
