Artists Inspiration:
“Influence was drawn from visiting Shanghai and encountering a city on the move like no other, expanding at lightning pace but reflecting back to the 1930’s when Shanghai was seen as the Paris of the East or better known as the whore of the Orient. There seemed to be a movement underway to ensure the city not forget its exciting past and efforts to recapture some of this vibrant history were at play. From my observation, modern China is experiencing a sexual revolution, where an oppressive past has given way to a new modern world of fashion, fun and luxurious opulence. I wanted to create a unique art piece that would reflect what I was seeing and feeling, it had to have deep Chinese tradition and power balanced out with this new outrageous opulence. From my perspective the new Shanghai is still the vibrant Paris of the East, or as she was better known, “the whore of the Orient”. Electroformed in pure 24k yellow gold, featuring a traditional Chinese dragon totem, symbolizing power, strength and good luck, combined with a solid 18k white gold pave’ set diamond lotus flower with 3.8 carat flawless white diamond solitaire at its peak.

“My motivation to create this sculpture was to highlight how some in society view masturbation as a devils act. The piece portrays the view by embracing our inner demons, we remove any power others may hold over us in ones pursuit of so called sinful pleasure. In addition I wanted the work to be reflective of boundaries by creating a reverse set diamond collar, drawing the line on how far you are willing to go in pursuit of self pleasure. The rose gold represents warmth and the rich red garnet set tongue portrays the devils fiery entrance or his gateway to hell for those who have exceeded the boundaries.”
The sculpture embodies sinful lust and passion and is electroformed from pure 24k gold, finished in 18k rose gold, featuring 18k white gold collar reverse set with 5 carats of flawless diamonds. Maria Jose Franco Maldonado’s family was her art school by the hand of Georgia O`Keefe, Elaine de Kooning, Lee Krasner, Artemisia Gentileschi, Matisse, Leonor Fini, Leonora Carrington, Louise Bourgeois, Maripaz Jaramillo, Judy Chicago, Basquiat, and so many others. She then formalized her studies in art direction and advertising in Buenos Aires, Argentina. In 2015, she showed her work for the very first time in three group exhibitions around New York at Shervin's Café Gallery, Brooklyn Fire Proof Gallery, and Greenpoint Gallery. That same year her illustrations accompanied Pilar Gualco`s literary work in Buenos Aires at Fauna Estudio Taller.
In 2017, she fell in love with embroidery. Slowly, she connected techniques and in the process dressed up a lot of weird humans. The crypt of the Kings Remains represents mortality and preserved sexual energy. The sexual spirit lives beyond the grave, etched into history and carried forward by those who have experienced this erotic power. Inspiration & Context - Immortality was the underlying inspiration when creating this sculpture. A Vanitas reflecting on ancient royal entombment as man’s vain attempt to remain immortal by being buried with ones treasures. I wanted the sculpture to represent the encasing of mind, body and soul as entombed sexual energy, preserved among the ruins of life. The sculpture symbolizes how ones sexual energy is at the core of their being and how it can transcend beyond the grave for others pleasure and satisfaction.
Materials - Electroformed from pure 24k gold featuring a solid 18k white gold royal crown, set with 10 carats of flawless diamonds.
