"Permeate and Radiate" Contemporary Abstract Painting, rose pink and turquoise
Located in New York, NY
48"x36" abstract composition in golden yellow, rose pink and turquoise on a white ground. The painting surface incorporates impasto brushwork and poured paint to give an active composition. This painting is signed on reverse by the artist, Debra Drexler.
Debra Drexler maintains studios in both New York and Oahu, Hawaii, and her work is informed by her unique bi-coastal experience. In her luminous, large-scale abstract paintings, she brings the transcendent experience of the Hawaiian landscape to a New York audience. Through her New York based studio and curatorial practices, she is also deeply engaged in critical conversation surrounding new abstraction. She states “Abstraction takes us to a state of timelessness that is primal in its humanity, disconnecting us momentarily from the mediated “now” of our electronic devices, and connecting us to a “now” that gives us a glimpse of the infinite. While our insistent digital projections can take us away from both our animal and spiritual nature, abstract painting reminds us again of what it means to be human. The corporality of the paint mirrors the flesh of the body and transports us into the timeless.”
Debra Drexler's paintings are informed both by participating in the contemporary resurgence of abstraction coming out of New York, and by living in the Post Colonial Pacific for close to three decades. In the 21st century, much of our experience is mediated through the screens of our devices. In contrast, the making and viewing of paintings remains a direct, engaging experience in Drexler's paintings. She aims to take us to a state of timelessness that is primal in its humanity, disconnecting us momentarily from the mediated “now” of our electronic devices, and connecting us to a “now” that gives us a glimpse of the infinite. As a colorist, Debra Drexler provokes unexpected color relationships and creates spatial contradictions that come from those interactions. Some of her color choices reference the post digital experience with its highly saturated synthetic color. The luminosity and saturation also mirror the unique quality of light and tropical color interactions in Hawai’i, where Drexler also lives. Her work is driven by an athletic painting...

"Pulse, Whirl" Abstract Painting in magenta, pinks and blues with golden yellow
Located in New York, NY
This is a contemporary abstract painting by the New York/ Hawaiian artist, Debra Drexler. Magenta and blue forms central to the painting are surrounded by rose pink, mauve, lavender and turquoise blue rise over a field of blue. You can see the influence of tropical colors in this canvas and a wistful yearning for the beach and the sea.
Debra Drexler is an American painter, installation artist, curator and professor. Her work is informed both by participating in the contemporary resurgence of abstraction coming out of New York, and by living in the Post Colonial Pacific since 1992. She has participated in over thirty solo and over 100 group exhibitions in national and international venues including Front Room Gallery, Exit Art, The Drawing Center, White Box-The Annex, Art Finance Partners, Van Der Plas Gallery, Sideshow Gallery, and Denise Bibro Gallery in New York, as well The Honolulu Museum of Art and Maui Arts and Cultural Center. Debra Drexler is a Professor at the University of Hawaii, where she is Chair of the Drawing and Painting Area. She maintains studios in Brooklyn, NY and on the island of Oahu in Hawai’i. Debra Drexler's most recent work is highly experimental large-scale abstract painting. In a recent review of a two-person exhibition (Whitehot Magazine,2017) Drexler's work as clearly referencing the long tradition of American abstraction and the established legacy of the New York School. The reviewer, Jonathan Goodman, described the work as a “new non-objectivity” that comes out of the current moment. He states that Drexler's painting “quite accurately describes the spirit of abstract art today, in which painting is struggling to break free of the constraints of time."
Debra Drexler frequently uses hot pink, a color with heavily gendered associations. Her hot pink brushstrokes...

Fitz Henry Lane (1804–1865)
Mary Ann, 1846
Oil on canvas, 19 x 27 ¼ in., actual; 27 1/4" H x 35 1/2" W, framed.
Signed, dated lower left: F. H. Lane 1846
Fitz Henry Lane was born in Gloucester, Massachusetts, a descendent of a family of fishermen that had resided on Cape Ann since 1623. Even with a lifelong handicap, Lane taught himself how to draw and paint and spent countless hours honing his technique. By the age of twenty-eight, he was hired to apprentice at Pendelton’s Lithography, the most important printmaking firm in Boston. Here he was exposed to other American and European artists, including British marine specialist Robert Salmon. Lane soon enjoyed success as both a painter and printmaker. By the 1840s his sale of oil paintings increased, which in turn diminished the need to rely on income from his lithographs. In 1841, Lane first exhibited at the Boston Athenaeum an oil painting entitled Scene at Sea, and in March 1842 he exhibited Ships in a Gale at the Apollo Association in New York City. By 1847,Lane’s reputation was firmly established, and he moved back to Gloucester permanently, except for trips to New York, Maine, Maryland, and possibly Puerto Rico. His highly refined images of Gloucester Harbor and its environs were celebrated for their minute detail and crisp delineations of form. During the late 1850s Lane simplified his works, painting thinly and eliminating detail in order to focus on effects of light and create a tranquil mood. Lane was more radical in his coastal scenes, from which, during the 1850s, he successively purged genre and topographical elements, so much so that, together with Martin Johnson Heade, he may well be considered the true avant-garde of American mid-century landscape painting. Lane’s mature work greatly influenced the second generation of Hudson River School artists such as John F. Kensett, Frederic E. Church, and Heade, who were forming their own luminist styles around the same time. Lane exhibited his work at the National Academy of Design in 1859 and at galleries in Boston, Gloucester, and Albany. His work is found in esteemed private collections and major museum collections, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art and Brooklyn Museum, New York; National Gallery of Art and Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; Carnegie Institute, Pittsburgh; Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City; Amon Carter Museum, Fort Worth; and the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum of Art, Madrid. The Cape Ann Historical Association and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, have large collections of Lane’s work.
The packet ship Mary Ann was built by Waterman and Ewell at Medford, Massachusetts, for Andrews T. Hall and Albert H. Brown of Boston. She was re-registered in 1856, her new owners being William Perkins and Israel Whitney. She was wrecked in 1861 at the mouth of the Bassein River, Burma, while bound there from Colombo, Ceylon.
