About the Item

Diane Ayott’s abstractions on paper, canvas, and panel are luxuriously physical objects resulting from the accrual of layer after layer of paint, color, and pattern, launched by imaginative titles into the realm of language, play, and political engagement. In their opulent surfaces, the eye experiences depth and continual movement, both spatial and aesthetic, as the mind integrates, deconstructs, and re-integrates the parts into wholes, weaving in new experiences and feelings over time living with her art. The larger pattern in “Back and Forth,” most obvious 10–15 feet from the painting, is three horizontal stripes and three green rectangles. Closer, this pattern is less prominent and the overall impression is chaotic: the dot pattern is loose, and the dots are drippy. Up close, however, one can see fascinating small details of the dots, lines of precise red paint, textured media, cuts in the media, and inscriptions on the materials embedded in the paint -- a card addressed to the artist, what seems to be a letterhead from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, etc. These details are obvious standing further away: to appreciate the painting fully, the viewer must move *Back and Forth*. Aha! The embedded mixed media materials also document a “back-and-forth” correspondence about art. Canvas with clean white edges (“gallery wrap”) is ready to hang, or can be placed in a frame.
