Exquisite, original oil on canvas painting of a ballet performance by the well known French artist, Jean-Louis-Marcel Cosson. Signed by the artist lower left. Condition is very good. Old wax reline. Solid mahogany wood frame with gold decoration. Overall framed measurements are 24.75 by 33.25 inches. Jean-Louis-Marcel Cosson was born in 1878 in Bordeaux. His first exhibition was in Paris at the Salon des Artistes Français, of which he would later become a member. He received an honourable mention at the age of 23 in 1901, and a third-place medal in 1911. He also exhibited at the Société des Beaux Arts and the Salon des Tuileries. ​ Cosson is a post-impressionist artist who developed a very distinctive style which makes him immediately recognisable among his peers. Carrier-Belleuse was a contemporary of Edgar Degas and they exhibited simultaneously at the major Salons in Paris. This classic example evokes the Belle Epoque period in french history and is superbly executed. Part of Daniela Astone's series of figures in different ethereal and surrealistic spaces. "The Kiss" brings to mind Gustav Klimt's famous 1908 painting of the same name but instead of an abstracted gold background, Astone creates a mysterious creature enveloping and suspending the figure in mid-air. The dark monster looks ominous until you notice the nude figure leaning into her partner, her hands lightly caressing or leaning on the the amorphous creature. Her body is relaxed and her eyes closed. As a classical artist who paints the nude figure everyday, Astone is masterful at depicting women at ease in their natural bodies rather than women self-conscious of their nudity—posing but fearful of exploitation at the same time—a theme in art history that continues today. Biography He was the brother of the painter Ricardo Villegas Cordero. He began his apprenticeship very young with José María Romero, with whom he remained for two years until entering the School of Fine Arts in Seville, where he was under the tutelage of Eduardo Cano. In 1860, when he was only 16 years old, he sold his work Little Philosophy for 2,000 reais at the Seville Exhibition. In 1867 he traveled to Madrid, where he entered Federico Madrazo's studio.
