About the Item
Kenneth Lochhead (1926-2006) was a prolific Canadian painter (and educator) who made an important contribution to abstraction both nationally and beyond.
After studying at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts from 1945-1948, Lochhead returned to Canada to be the Director of the School of Art at the University of Saskatchewan. He remained in the role for almost fifteen years followed by professorships at the University of Manitoba, York University (Toronto), and the University of Ottawa. As a result he had an influence and reputation across the country.
In 1955 Lochhead created the Emma Lake Professional Artists' workshop, helping establish an active artist community in Regina. The program attracted a number of high-profile American artists, such as Kenneth Noland and Jules Olitski. Lochhead's own aesthetic was both parallel to and influenced by the color-field painters who came to international prominence in the late 1960's.
Lochhead remains the most successful artist in the "Regina Five" group. The moniker emerged in the early 1960's after an exhibition of five abstract painters from Saskatchewan at the National Gallery of Canada.
This work, "Colour Check" is an enamel painting on paper showcasing Lochhead's signature abstract aesthetic. Slightly off-centre, a turquoise slash of color intersects with an elongated check-mark shape in lemon yellow. These vibrant colors stand out from the misty background which gradually fades from dark shades of blue and purple into vanilla.
Lochhead received numerous awards and honors over his nearly sixty-year career, including; being made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1970 and receiving the Governor General's Award in 2006.

Color serves to create a window onto natural space and light, even as the forms themselves acknowledge their own framing.
