A captivating landscape capturing the surroundings of Harrogate, England, with the town visible in the far distance, painted in situ, a plein air. Signed G. Loppé, dated 06.07.03. Painted on cardboard, with "Harrogate" inscribed on the reverse. The artwork is mounted in its original gilt wood frame. Gabriel Loppé (1825–1913): Painter, Photographer, and Mountaineer Gabriel Loppé was a distinguished French landscape painter, photographer, and pioneering mountaineer. His passion for both art and the mountains made him a leading figure in Alpine painting and the first foreign member of the British Alpine Club in London. Born in 1825, in Montpellier, France, Loppés early years were difficult, and at 16, he left city life for health reasons, joining his parents in Embrun in the Hautes-Alpes. At the age of 21, he climbed a small mountain in Languedoc and found a group of painters who were sketching the summit and that day he found his vocation. He developed a passion for plein air painting, capturing nature directly from life. In 1846, Loppé traveled to the Bernese Oberland in Switzerland, where he joined students of François Diday and Alexandre Calame, two of the most prominent Swiss landscape painters of the time. Though often associated with their studios, Loppé remained largely self-taught, shaping his own distinctive style. Loppé’s love for the mountains was as strong as his artistic ambition. In 1846, he embarked on his first glacier excursion with the English climber Beresford Walker, an experience that led to a lifelong passion for mountaineering. He made multiple ascents of Mont Blanc. His ability to paint directly from high-altitude locations set him apart from his contemporaries, making him the founder of the painter-alpinist movement that emerged in Savoie in the late 19th century. His works are admired for their atmospheric depth and spontaneity, qualities that resonated with audiences in London and Paris. Loppé first exhibited in Geneva in 1852, and by 1864, he became an honorary member of the Alpine Club in London. Over the years, his paintings were featured in major exhibitions, including the Universal Exhibitions in London (1862) and Paris (1867, 1878). He frequently showcased his work in Geneva, London, and Paris, earning a reputation as one of the most prominent Alpine artists of his time. In 1870, he opened his own exhibition gallery in Chamonix, "La Galerie Alpestre," a hub for showcasing his mountain landscapes. His photographic ventures also gained prominence, with Loppé acquiring his first camera in 1887, further expanding his artistic vision. Loppé continued painting and mountaineering well into his later years, spending summers in Chamonix and Zermatt. In 1880, he moved to Paris, where he participated in the Salon Officiel exhibitions until 1894. By 1910, declining health forced him to stop painting and he passed away in 1913, at his home in Paris. Loppé’s artistic contributions continue to be celebrated today. A traveling exhibition, in 2005–2006 was dedicated to his work and displayed in Annecy, Chambéry, and Gap, with an accompanying catalog. Harrogate, located in North Yorkshire, is a historic spa town renowned for its elegant architecture, lush gardens, and healing mineral springs. Nestled on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales, the town is surrounded by rolling hills, woodlands, and picturesque countryside, making it a haven for nature lovers. The nearby Nidderdale Area offers stunning landscapes, from rugged moorlands to tranquil rivers and valleys. Famous green spaces such as The Stray and Valley Gardens provide serene walking paths, vibrant floral displays, and a connection to the town’s Victorian heritage. The present landscape view is probably taken from this area. With its blend of natural charm, historic significance, and scenic surroundings, Harrogate remains one of England’s most picturesque destinations.
