Tide Goes Out: Abstract Expressionist Oil Painting in Blue, Grey, Green, Beige

By Jenny Nelson

Located in Hudson, NY

Vertical abstract expressionist oil painting on canvas in earthy shades of sky blue and Payne's grey, with accents of green and peach against an off-white foreground 'When the Tide Goes Out' painted by Hudson Valley artist, Jenny Nelson, in 2022 Oil on canvas 60 x 54 x 1.5 inches, with white painted sides Excellent condition, ready to hang Signed, verso This abstract expressionist oil painting was painted by Woodstock, NY based artist, Jenny Nelson, in 2022. The colorful abstract composition is completed in an expressionist style with loose and gestural brushstrokes in calming tones of dusty blue, stone blue, and green. The contrasting patches of pale pink and peach pop against the subtle pale beige and light blue background. Color is applied in light layers which is noticeable in the faint yet visible under tones of the painting. The oil painting is unframed, with white painted sides, so framing is optional. The artist's signature is located on the back of the painting. Artist Statement: My work has always been anchored in drawing. I spent years drawing and painting from life. This instilled a strong sense of space and structure. At some point I became more interested in the negative space surrounding the objects I was observing and modifying the objects themselves. I began to organically develop an abstract language, but the sense of structure and organization remained constant in the painting. I apply paint in layers using palette knives, brushes and oil sticks. I initially draw loose gestures and a variety of spontaneous marks. Often traces of previous layers remain visible, allowing colors to interact in ways I could not have anticipated. This process leaves me feeling quite lost a lot of the time, and I have had to learn to become comfortable with that feeling. This sometimes builds to frustration, and I will scrape off much of what was applied, but the result of doing this is often something wonderful that moves the painting forward. I view the painting process as a collaboration between myself and the materials. A conversation starts that has a beginning and an end, but everything in between is unpredictable. It seems at first some exciting things may show up but it’s important to disregard these first, too beautiful bursts, work over them, and develop something deeper from them. As the painting evolves, shapes and lines solidify, and I begin to see how the parts affect the whole. This way of layering, adding and subtracting, creates a history on the canvas. Shapes have a story to tell. Lines that have been obliterated and resurrected over and over again have an emotional charge. This process that started as a wild party ends up as a contemplative carefully edited composition, involving precise modifications, while hopefully leaving the life force in tact. About the artist: Jenny Nelson attended Maine College of Art in Portland Maine, and is a graduate of Bard College, where she received a scholarship to the Lacoste School of the Arts in France. She has been living in Woodstock, New York for nearly two decades, including a Residency at the Byrdcliffe Art Colony from November 2004-08. Jenny has been exhibiting for many years nationally and regionally. 18th Century Oil on Canvas Portrait, Major Alexander Brown in Military Uniform.

By Sir David Wilkie

Located in Cotignac, FR

18th Century Military portrait of a young officer in Napoleonic period military dress. The painting is not signed but the subject is Major Alexander Brown. The work is oil on canvas later mounted on board and presented in a fine 'Regence style' carved gilt frame. There are labels to the back referring to the subject, 'Major Brown of Trinity' and a framers trade label from Edinburgh. A magnificent and imposing portrait of a young military officer in the prime of his life. His red uniform adorned with fine buttons, fringed epaulettes and high gilt collar. His ruddy complexion offset by his stylish hair, a quiff and swept forward to the sides as was the fashion at the time. Sir David Wilkie RA (18 November 1785 – 1 June 1841) was a Scottish painter, especially known for his portraits, including formal royal ones, and scenes from his travels to Europe and the Middle East. He painted successfully in a wide variety of genres, including historical scenes. His main base was in London, but he died and was buried at sea, off Gibraltar, returning from his first trip to the Middle East. He was sometimes known as the "people's painter". He was Principal Painter in Ordinary to King William IV and Queen Victoria. Apart from royal portraits, his best-known painting today is probably The Chelsea Pensioners Reading the Waterloo Dispatch of 1822 in Apsley House. Sir David Wilkie was actually admitted in 1799 (despite only being 14) through the influence of the Earl of Leven...

"New England Farm, " Landscape Oil Painting
"New England Farm, " Landscape Oil Painting

"New England Farm, " Landscape Oil Painting

By John C. Traynor

Located in Westport, CT

This large landscape oil painting by John Traynor captures a scene in New England. Cows are visible in front of a long picket fence, with a red barn and house behind the fence and lush green trees on either side and along the hills in the horizon. Fluffy, almost abstracted clouds sit above the hills, with a patch of blue skies shining through toward the top of the image. The painting is 48" x 72", and 58" x 82" framed. It is professionally framed in a classic, antiqued, gold leaf frame. It is signed by the artist in the bottom right-hand corner of the canvas, and is wired and ready to hang. John C. Traynor's painting style is reminiscent of some 19th century painters and the Dutch Masters. He uses his knowledge of light and color to create a certain mood in each of his works. The creation of atmosphere is an important element in Traynor's paintings. Painting outdoors, on location, is a prime source of inspiration and ideas for his landscapes. John travels extensively, painting the landscapes around him. John was born in 1961 and spent his early years in Chester and Mendham, New Jersey. His art studies began at Delbarton School in Morristown, New Jersey, and from there he furthered his education at Paier College of Art in New Haven, Connecticut. He studied figure painting at the Art Students League of New York, as a merit scholar, with Frank Mason. Traynor continued his studies in Vermont with Mr. Mason on landscape painting, drawing with Carroll N. Jones Jr. of Stowe, Vermont and sculpture with Brother Jerome Cox...

Forces of Nature 24 - Textural Abstract Minimalist Artwork on Natural Canvas

By Len Klikunas

Located in Los Angeles, CA

Artist Len Klikunas paints to modify experienced reality through visual perception. Klikunas focuses on the larger idea behind his original abstract minimalist artworks. The work is characterized by “mindful artlessness” and simplicity. Understated and subtle, the work doesn’t only refer to itself, and it doesn’t explain everything. Through a monochromatic palette and skillful manipulation of light and shadow, his artworks invite contemplation and evoke a dialogue between the viewer and the art. This 12-inch square post-minimalist artwork is wired and ready to hang. The sides of this textural artwork are painted as a continuation of the front. The artist signs the artwork on the back. Convenient delivery is available for those in the local Los Angeles area, and affordable worldwide shipping is available for US and international art collectors. A certificate of authenticity issued by the gallery is included. Born in 1944 in Chicago, Illinois, Len Klikunas is a visionary artist who mesmerizes the art world with his minimalist paintings, blurring the line between art and architecture. Klikunas achieves a serene aesthetic by masterfully blending layers of paint and expertly manipulating light and shadow. The resulting compositions on canvas exude a subtle yet profound allure, inviting viewers to engage with their senses and explore the richly textured surfaces. Len Klikunas' textural works are represented by Artspace Warehouse Los Angeles. They have been exhibited and collected throughout the world. Gorgeous tonalist oil painting woman walking in field by pond with home in background by Willis Seaver Adams (American, 1844-1921), circa 1880. Trees and an amazing sky in the background add depth and interest to this beautiful piece. Signed "W. S. Adams" lower right corner. Condition: Previous restoration includes relining of canvas. Frame is vintage gilt molded and wood frame and shows previous repair of molding losses. Image size: 20"H x 24"W. Auctions records for the artist exceed $6,000. Willis Seaver Adams was known for his landscapes of the Connecticut River Valley. A relative recluse for much of his artistic life, his loneliness can be seen in much of his works. Oil miniatures were the focus for almost all of his later works. He is credited with over 425 oils, watercolors, and drawings. Willis Seaver was born in 1844 on a farm in Suffield, near the Connecticut River. He intermittently attended the Suffield Academy, and always wanted to be a painter. A wealthy doctor became his patron, and financed his studies in 1868 at the Royal Academy in Antwerp. When the doctor passed away, Adams returned home and struggled to make a living painting. After working for a photographer for three years, he opened his own studio. Adams helped organize Cleveland's first watercolor exhibit in 1876. Soon thereafter, he completed a portrait of Rutherford B. Hayes, then governor of Ohio, prior to his becoming President of the United States. This portrait enhanced Adams notoriety. In 1878, Adams traveled to Italy where he opened a studio in Venice, and became friendly with neighbor James Whistler. Prior to returning to Springfield, Adams lived in Florence, Italy for three years. He returned to became an instructor for the Springfield Art Association, and began to exhibit his works at the galleries of James D. Gill. His first one-man exhibit was held there in 1894. Other successful exhibitions took place in Chicago, New York, and Boston. Although his works garnered respectable prices and reflected his success, Adams felt he was due more recognition. In 1906, he moved to Greenfield, Massachusetts and converted a barn into a studio. There, he fell into relative obscurity, accompanied mainly by his dog, Collie. In 1921, Adams passed away. Examples of Willis Adams works can be seen at the Kent Memorial Library, the Wadsworth Atheneum, and the Suffield Academy. Several Suffield residents are thought to own Adams paintings.
