Memorial, yahrzeit candle, gold leaf, trees

By Audrey Anastasi

Located in Brooklyn, NY

This small-scale, slightly textured, intimate painting could be a Hanukkah or Christmas gift. The 12”x 12” canvas has “gallery wrapped” edges. The edges are also “loosely” painted with a touch of surface paint appearing. The work is pre-wired. It can be hung as is, or it could be framed for a more polished presentation. The gold has a reflective quality changing with the light and angle of viewing, which adds to the spiritual character of the subject. ______________________ Audrey Frank Anastasi is a prolific a visual artist, curator, gallerist, educator, philanthropist, and arts advocate. She works primarily in 2-dimensional mediums: painting, drawing, collage, mixed media, focusing on the human subject. Most of Ms. Anastasi's figurative works are painted with her non-dominant left hand. She has created large bodies of works of birds, animals and birch trees. She has exhibited in over 20 solo & 200 group shows. Her original “ref-u-gee” series of forced-migration–themed artwork was shown in a solo exhibition from October, 2022 through January, 2023 at the Brooklyn College library gallery in collaboration with the Valentine Museum of Art (VMoA.) Accompanying the show, a limited-edition monograph with over 180 images of passport sized paintings, four 8 foot tall works on panels, and a foreword by Phyllis Braff. The book was printed in 2023 by SIZ Industria Grafica, Verona, Italy. Additional book and catalog publications include "Stations of the Cross", SPQR press, with an essay by Amir Bey, BREUCKELEN magazine, “Audrey Frank Anastasi” catalog with an essay by renowned feminist art critic Cindy Nemser, and "Collage" with an essay by Giancarlo T. Roma. Born in a predominantly Jewish suburb of Baltimore, Maryland, Audrey was always drawn to art. Her parents had an innate sense of style. Her father's side of the family were immigrant merchants. They owned what was called, in those days, a junior department store. Audrey’s father would arrange creative window displays. And he was a snappy dresser, looking surprisingly elegant in his patterned or pastel sports jackets. Audrey’s mother, on the other hand, came from a more rural upbringing. Although her maternal grandmother was from Eastern Europe, her maternal grandfather was born in the USA. “Mr. Jew Arthur,” as he was referred to by locals, owned a tavern in a predominantly African-American community, Fairfield, Maryland. Not only did he sell spirits, he definitely partook of them, as well. While still a teenager, Audrey’s mother, Rose Gussie, changed her name to Joyce and headed to Atlanta, Georgia, and later to New York City to be a cosmetician and hosiery model. She also had an impeccable sense of style. And in her picture albums, beside the photographs, were pages upon pages of charming ink drawings of stylish ladies. Of her own formative years, Audrey expresses, “I'm forever grateful that when I was a child, my mother indulged me with regular outings to the library where I emerged with armloads of books, and weekly visits to the Baltimore Museum of Art. There I would pass the gorgeous bust of Queen Nefertiti and the scary mummies on the way to my art lessons. There isn't a single moment of my conscious life when I didn't think of myself as an artist.” Audrey also studied with a local artist, “Miss Mary,” who soon asked Audrey to become a teaching assistant, instructing other students how to observe shapes and tonalities, while faithfully drawing charcoal drawings of classical plaster casts...

"Stars and Stripes" Americana Pop 23 Karat Gold Leaf/Red/Blue Oil, Flag Painting

By Charlotte Andry Gibbs

Located in Wellesley, MA

"Stars and Stripes" 23 Karat Gold Leaf and Oil on Linen 26 x 50 Inches Charlotte Gibbs’ "flag" and "star" paintings often reference the artist's interest in Pop art and sometimes incorporate 23 karat gold leaf in addition to oil paint, but not always. With its depiction of a graphically idealized American flag. "Stars and Stripes" is at once lovely and bold. Beautifully painted and exquisitely executed, these elegant works of rich color are sophisticated examples of Gibbs' ability to invoke whimsy while demanding serious attention, and the artist's simple distressed white wood double lattice frame is the perfect complement. Also available is a smaller version of this painting, "American Standard" 18 x 34 inches, as well as a vertical variation "Vertical U.S. Flag" 34 x 18 inches. Additional variations of the American flag series are available without 23 karat gold leaf ("Reverse Image" in black and white, "Flag #4" in black, white and tan, and "Black and White" which is black, gray and white). The artist's "Canton" series of paintings focuses on stars only. Paintings from this series are available in navy blue with gold leaf stars ("Canton Major" 34 x 48 Inches), olive drab with gold leaf stars ("Canton Olive and Gold" 30 x 42 Inches), and all 23 karat gold leaf ("Starry Splendor" 30 x 42 Inches). Gibbs is often commissioned to paint variations on her 'flags' and 'stars' to customize scale, orientation (horizontal or vertical) palette, and/or symbols of particular significance to the client. Additionally available are flag paintings in various sizes inspired by the British flag with and without 23 karat gold leaf ("Sgt. Pepper Jack," "Union Jack Red and Gold," "Union Jack Navy and Gold," and "Union Jack White and Gold"), the Scottish flag...

Christ Pantocrator" After an Icon in the style of the Moscow School

Located in Segovia, ES

"Christ Pantocrator". After an Icon in the style of the Moscow school (15th century). Somewhat similar to that of Rublev. Author: Oliver Samsinguer Egg tempera and gold leaf on gesso and on wood. Dimensions; (H) 42 x (W) 33.5 x (D) 3.5 cm. (H) 16.54 x (W) 13.19 x (D) 1.38 in. This is how the artist sums up the technique used by him to create the icon: “The aim of these steps is to create a durable painting. The icon is eternal. The first step is to choose a support, traditionally made of wood, from the center of the trunk to avoid warping it. For this purpose, two hardwood bolts were often used on the back to give the picture panel additional stability. Often a frame is milled out. Then the image carrier is sanded smooth and now 12 or 14 thin layers of gesso are applied and sanded smooth as well. Then the preliminary drawing is applied and the drawing board is prepared with a special preparation called bolus. This bolus can be polished to a high gloss. Afterwards, the gold leaf is "shot" with special brushes. It dries up within a few hours and can now be polished with an agate. Gold leaf is real 24-carat gold . Now, the actual process of painting begins. Egg tempera is made fresh from egg yolk, water, and a little vinegar. This is used to prepare the color pigments. Tempera painting is done in numerous layers from dark to light. When the icon is finished, it is left to dry for a few months and varnished with a special varnish called Olifa made from boiled linseed oil and other ingredients”. Impressionistic Cityscape Acrylic Painting, "Golden Skies No. 4"

Located in San Diego, CA

The Golden Skies series came about after several years of experimenting with new ways to create my urban/rural cityscape scenes in a fresh way. I was inspired to utilize gold leaf after seeing the biopic film, Klimt. In the movie, Klimt (John Malkovich) is working the “Adele Bloch-Bauer” portrait, and in the scene, he was applying gold leaf on the painting. Later while visiting the Timken Museum in Balboa...
